However, using barrier protection is important for all types of sex &#8211; and here\u2019s why.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-19810\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HPV-Oral-Sex-and-Cancer-Risk-How-to-Protect-Yourself.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HPV-Oral-Sex-and-Cancer-Risk-How-to-Protect-Yourself.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/02\/HPV-Oral-Sex-and-Cancer-Risk-How-to-Protect-Yourself-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<h2>What is HPV?<\/h2>\n<p>Human Papilomavirus is a group of viruses &#8211; some 100 in total, including about 40 that affect your genitals. Most are innocuous and have no symptoms or negative effects, bu<b>t <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV-6, 11, 16, and 18 are the strains most likely to cause genital warts and cancer of the cervix and penis, respectively. (Those are also the strains protected by vaccinations like Gardasil, which are generally only given to those under 25). <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HPV is an extremely common STI &#8211; \u00a0it\u2019s estimated that three quarters of reproductive-aged women will have a strain of HPV at some point during their life. \u00a0HPV will usually go away on its own as your body passes the infection, which is why even a positive HPV screening is not that serious. If you\u2019re over 30, it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> more likely to develop into cervical cancer, but with regular Pap smears it\u2019s easy to catch. Currently, there is no approved HPV screening for men. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>HPV can pass from skin to skin contact, meaning yes you can pass it from fingering, oral sex, blow jobs and penetrative sex &#8211; even if you wear a condom. <\/strong><\/p>\n<h2>What\u2019s the Link to Oral Cancers?<\/h2>\n<blockquote><p>Over the past decade there has been at least a four- to five-fold increase in the number of oropharynx cancers in the US.<a href=\"https:\/\/www.mountsinai.org\/locations\/head-neck-institute\/cancer\/oral\/hpv-faqs\">[i]<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The oropharynx refers to the back of the throat, base of tongue and tonsils, and HPV is thought to cause 70% of oropharyngeal cancers in the United States, with HPV-16 causing 60% of all oropharyngeal cancers. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/cancer\/hpv\/basic_info\/hpv_oropharyngeal.htm\">[ii]<\/a>\u00a0The reason for this increase is thought to be due to the increase in average amount of sexual partners, though it\u2019s of note that mean are 3x as likely as women to have HPV of the throat, and there seems to be a link to smoking as well.<\/p>\n<p>However, just because you have oral HPV doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019ll necessarily get cancer &#8211; some 12,000 people in the US do per year &#8211; but it&#8217;s still important to reduce your risk of spreading HPV.<\/p>\n<h2>How Can I Practice Safer Oral Sex?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can develop symptoms of HPV years after being exposed, and, as mentioned, many strains have no symptom at \u00a0all, making it extremely hard to pinpoint when and \u00a0from whom you got it. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using dental dams and condoms are the safest ways to have oral sex \u00a0&#8211; not just to prevent the spread of HPV, but <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/new-sti-havent-heard-yet\/\">other STIs<\/a> as well.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re not sure how to use a dental dam &#8211; or even know what one looks like &#8211; then we (much like a dental dam) have you covered. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How to Use a Dental Dam<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A dental dam is a thin sheet of rubber that you can find at most sex stores, but if you don\u2019t have one you can also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/5-surprising-uses-for-condoms-in-and-out-of-the-bedroom\/\">use a condom<\/a> &#8211; just snip off the tip with scissors, cut it lengthwise and voila!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You may have seen a sex ed teacher stretch a dental dam wide in front of their mouth to show how stretchy it is, but when actually using one for cunnilingus, it\u2019s much more enjoyable (and a lot less like making out with a piece of rubber) to use a dental dam like this:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/all-lubed-up-ready-to-go-why-and-how-to-use-lube\/\">Apply lube<\/a> to your partner\u2019s vulva (around the labia and the clitoris)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lay the dental over it and press it gently into the crevices &#8211; and treat this as a sexy tease with your fingers, not a chore!<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One partner will need to hold on to the edges of the dental dam. It can be the receiving partner but they might get distracted!<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Conclusion<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While an extra barrier may seem like a bummer, keeping your sex as risk-free as possible is probably the biggest turn on we can think of.
