It make sense if you think of \u2018hetero\u2019 as meaning \u2018unlike\u2019 and \u2018homo\u2019 as meaning \u2018like,\u2019 and includes people who are non-binary (identify as neither male or female). <\/span><\/p>\n<h3>What is Pansexuality?<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The recent coming out of the fabulous Janelle Monae as pansexual left a lot of ladies extremely happy &#8211; and some people quite confused. What exactly is pansexuality &#8211; and isn\u2019t it just a dressed up synonym for bisexuality?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nope! Pansexuality means an attraction to all gender, but regardless of gender. An easy way to think of it is the slogan \u201cHearts, Not Parts\u2019 &#8211; as in, pansexual people are attracted to people without any consideration of their gender; it doesn\u2019t factor into their attraction at all. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>How Can I Support My Pansexual Pals &amp; Bisexual Buddies?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Both pansexual and bisexual people can get a lot of grief &#8211; both from the straight and the LGBT community, which is perhaps why they come out less than their gay and lesbian counterparts, &#8211; despite being a majority in the community. Bi and pan men uniquely face a stigma, with only 12% saying they are out to everyone in their lives, compared to the (still low compared to gay and lesbian) 28% of bi people overall who are out.*<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes supporting your LGBTQ friends is as easy as being a good friend to anyone &#8211; you\u2019re there to share fun times together, celebrate good times and commiserate over every annoying boss or awful breakup. But here are some<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/10-myths-bisexuality-need-to-end\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> specific things your bi or pan friend is probably tired of hearing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><b>That they\u2019re \u2018faking it\u2019 for attention or are \u2018really gay\/straight\u2019 and can\u2019t make up their mind: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Considering the sort of negative attention garnered by these orientations, it doesn\u2019t really make sense that anyone would look for it actively. And, while it can be hard for monosexual people to envision, there\u2019s doesn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">need<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to be a choice for dating one type of person &#8211; unless we just didn\u2019t see that box on our \u2018how to be a happy, sexually-fulfilled adult\u2019 application form.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>That they must non-monogamous or likely to cheat: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are bisexual and pansexual <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/when-more-means-merrier-non-monogamy-and-modern-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who are in open relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and who cheat &#8211; just as there are some straight and gay people who do the same &#8211; it\u2019s not a prerequisite.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>That if they haven\u2019t had experience with someone of the same\/opposite gender, they can\u2019t \u2018really\u2019 be bi or pan: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While some people might find, upon <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/lgbtqa-exploring-bicuriosity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">acting on an attraction to someone<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, that they aren\u2019t as interested in that gender as they thought, that certainly isn\u2019t the case for everyone. Afterall, no one asks straight people \u2018how they could really know they were straight\u2019 before they began having sexual activity. And, of course, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/what-is-asexuality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you can be asexual while bi or panromantic<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">!<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>That they\u2019re \u2018straight\u2019 when they\u2019re in an opposite gender relationship or gay when they\u2019re not: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in a relationship isn\u2019t a magical potion that changes someone\u2019s orientation; you\u2019re still bi and pan whatever the type of relationship you\u2019re in, and when you\u2019re single.<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>That \u2018their same-gender\u2019 relationships don\u2019t count or aren\u2019t relatable: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is a unique type of treatment that often comes from well-meaning and otherwise accepting friends and partners. If you\u2019re cool with your girlfriend, for example, having sex with other women but not other men, think about whether that means you don\u2019t really view this relations as important or \u2018counting\u2019 as much as \u2018heterosexual\u2019 hookups. If you love dishing about bad dates and exciting crushes with a friend, but become uncomfortable when they talk about dating someone of the same gender, they are definitely picking up on that. <\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><b>And a Reminder About the LGBTQ Friends You Didn\u2019t Know You Have<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t think you have any bisexual or pan friends? It\u2019s possible you do and just don\u2019t know it! There are a lot of reasons people might not be out &#8211; either to themselves or everyone in their lives.
