We\u2019re midway through February, and you know what that means, right? National Condom Day<\/strong>, of course!<\/span><\/p>\n

What – did you think overpriced five-course meals and ugly heart-shaped jewelry were the only ways to celebrate February 14th? Not so, my amorous amigos and amigas.<\/span><\/p>\n

National Condom Day is a holiday that\u2019s been alive and kicking since the 80s, and for good reason \u2013 only about <\/span>20-30% of folks used a condom<\/span><\/a> during their last sexual encounter, and <\/span>STI rates are continuing to rise<\/span>, according to the CDC.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s the Big Deal About Barriers?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Barrier contraception \u2013 male and female condoms, dental dams, gloves, etc \u2013 are just about the best way we have of <\/span>stopping the spread of STIs<\/span><\/a>, especially when in conjunction with regular screenings.<\/span><\/p>\n

While there are many easily-treatable STIs, some can have long term health effects that can lead to cancer or reduced <\/span>fertility<\/span>. For such a cheap and easy solution to having safer, less stressful sex, we think there are plenty of reasons to not only insist on using them, but to <\/span>actually <\/span>like<\/span><\/i> using condoms<\/span><\/a>!<\/span><\/p>\n

Are You Using Condoms Correctly?<\/span><\/h2>\n

There are plenty of <\/span>mistakes to be made when it comes to using condoms<\/span><\/a> \u2013 from thinking you don\u2019t need them for <\/span>same sex encounters<\/span><\/a>, to putting them on <\/span>after<\/span><\/i> sex has already started, to wearing condoms that just don\u2019t fit (just like penises comes in all different shapes and sizes, so do condoms<\/a>).<\/span><\/p>\n

While your wallet may seem like the best place to store something this important, the constant compression can actually degrade the benefits of a condom. Check the expiration date before use. While it might visibly still look okay to use, spermicides can go bad after some time.<\/span><\/p>\n

Know that little empty spot that\u2019s at the tip of a condom? Yeah, it\u2019s there for a reason. It\u2019s important to leave a little pinch at the tip so that the ejaculation doesn\u2019t leak out of the sides of the condom if there\u2019s no space. Which brings up another point\u2014don\u2019t snuggle while still inside your partner post-ejaculation. Pull out, clean up, then enjoy all the cuddling you want.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being informed and in charge of your sexual health is crucial, whether you\u2019ll be the one wearing the condom or not, and especially as deplorable practices such as \u2018<\/span>stealthing<\/span><\/a>\u2019 become more widespread.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, abstinence is the only way to guarantee 100% safe sex when it comes to preventing pregnancies and STI\/STDs, but if you are going to have sex (because, hello, there are a lot of benefits beyond pleasure) condoms are a great choice with 98% effectiveness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Treat yourself by purchasing your own condoms for the bedside drawer and to add to your <\/span>\u2018hook up\u2019 must-bring bag<\/span><\/a> \u2013 heck, even <\/span>grab a few different types<\/span> and enjoy a very scientific evening of research into which ones work best for you and your partner!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe we just aren\u2019t the mushy sort, but that sounds like a pretty magical February 14th to us!<\/span><\/p>\n
