It\u2019s been translated into many languages and continues to make its way onto the shelves of book stores and homes worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But what do you actually know about the Kama Sutra? Sure, most understand it as a guide to super bendy ways in which to get down, but in actuality<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014it\u2019s a whole lot more than that.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Does \u2018Kama Sutra\u2019 Mean?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u2018kama sutra\u2019 has been translated into many different things. Some refer to it as a means to \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treatise on sexual pleasure\u201d, <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">while others refer to it as the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cteachings on desire\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whichever way you look at it however, the text was written as a kind of life manual for sexuality, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">spirituality<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and prosperity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is the Kama Sutra All About?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kama Sutra was written with three objectives in mind: dharma, artha, and kama:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dharma, the ability to live an upstanding and wonderful life, is the highest objective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Artha, the accumulation of wealth, is the second highest objective.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kama, the enjoyment of the senses, is the third highest objective.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, you\u2019ll notice that the text was not merely a compilation of sexual positions for couples to enjoy\u2026 it\u2019s far more meaningful, versatile, and well-rounded than that.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while sex does play a prominent role in the text, it\u2019s written in such a way that it educates the reader about its place within a well-ordered life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite this however, the takeaway for many is that the text was a manual solely made for sexual pleasure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kama Sutra: It\u2019s Not Just Sex<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By now, you know that the Kama Sutra is not just a text about sexual pleasure. In fact, it is a series of seven different books all pertaining to different spheres within one\u2019s life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Book One: Sadharana (General)<\/h3>\n<p>Book one is a mere introduction, teaching the reader about the three life objectives: dharma, artha, and kama. It\u2019s also about how to set up a home, the company a man should keep, and the different classes of women.<\/p>\n<h3>Book Two: Samprayogika (Embracing)<\/h3>\n<p>This is the more commonly-known book, as it pertains to sex. It talks about the different kinds of love, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/science-desire-subtracting-adds\/\">the forces of desire<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/5-kissing-tips-even-better-sex\/\">kissing<\/a>, 65 sexual positions, how a woman should <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/killing-kittens-advice-great-head\/\">perform oral sex,<\/a> and other acts of a sexual nature.<\/p>\n<h3>Book Three: Kanya Samprayuktaka (Finding a Wife)<\/h3>\n<p>Here, the text concerns getting engaged and being married. It also surrounds <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/boost-bedroom-confidence\/\">female confidence<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/flirting-101-charming-not-creepy\/\">courting<\/a>, how to show affection and adoration for another, and what both men and women should do to\/with their partner if they want to marry.<\/p>\n<h3>Book Four: Bharyadhikarika (For Wives)<\/h3>\n<p>This book is for women who are married\u2014how they should behave in and without her husband\u2019s presence, how each wife should behave towards their shared husband according to age, as well as advice for men who do not like their wife or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/how-to-talk-to-your-partner-about-nonmonogamy-and-other-practical-advice\/\">those who have more than one wife<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h3>Book Five: Paradika (Other People\u2019s Wives)<\/h3>\n<p>In book five, the characteristics of men and women are discussed, as well as why some women reject men. It also talks about <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/does-she-have-feelings-for-you-here-are-10-signs-she-likes-you\/\">how men can approach women<\/a> (even those who are not their own wife), and how to keep their wife.<\/p>\n<h3>Book Six: Vaisika (Courtesans)<\/h3>\n<p>This text is about the different types of courtesans, the characteristics of a man that will attract women, how a man should behave and live, and how to attain wealth. It also talks about how to spot a partner that is losing interest, how to rekindle with an old lover, how to handle gains and losses, and how to deal with doubt.<\/p>\n<h3>Book Seven: Aupamishadika (Attracting Others)<\/h3>\n<p>The last book concerns winning over a partner\u2019s heart, desire, how to enlarge the penis, and various other odds and ends.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Kama Sutra: Religion &amp; Culture\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To highlight the vast difference not only between cultures but also religions, you\u2019ll be interested to know that the Kama Sutra was written with religion in mind.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And unlike Christianity that says that sex serves as a means of procreation, Hindus believe that the act and enjoyment of sexual activity is important in every day life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, and despite it being written over 2,000 years ago, the text is oddly liberal, giving women the freedom to choose their own partners<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be it for marriage or sex (and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/when-infidelity-leads-to-sexual-dysfunction-guest-post-dr-tammy-nelson\/\">extramarital affairs<\/a>).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, this kind of liberal thinking, especially in countries like Saudi Arabia, is completely unheard of, making the Kama Sutra an interesting text and journey into traditional ways of life in the second century.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kama Sutra Positions for Everyone<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now that we\u2019ve covered the extensive contents of the seven Kama Sutra books, let\u2019s take a peek into what is unequivocally the most popular topic. That is, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sex-positions\/\">sexual positions<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while you may believe that the<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex positions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that are featured are super difficult to achieve and probably require five to ten years of gymnastics beforehand, this isn\u2019t always the case.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are five positions from the Kama Sutra that just about anyone can enjoy, regardless of your flexibility or fitness level.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>1. The Clasping Position<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aka, missionary that\u2019s Kama Sutra-approved. In this position, the woman should be laying on her back with her legs open, and the man will simply enter her.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is this in the Kama Sutra list of sex positions? Well, doing it missionary style doesn\u2019t always allow one maximum entry, encouraging a longer tryst and perhaps several rounds.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>2. Indrani<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With the woman on her back cradling her knees, the man will kneel in front and enter her. This allows for deeper penetration, especially if the woman grabs the man\u2019s butt to pull him closer.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>3. Her head should be cradled on top of his knees and her crotch directly in front of the man&#8217;s face, with knees out to both sides. And these three brands have, of late, hit the spotlight for their Kama Sutra-inspired themes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In March 2019, the ready-to-assemble furniture store, IKEA, decided to revive the ol\u2019 Kama Sutra by bringing out an expert guide on how to make your bedroom\u2026 more sexy. This book, rife with sexual undertones, is called, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ikea.com\/ms\/en_US\/kama-sutra\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">IKEA Kama Sutra<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What this book actually is, is an ultimate guide of achieving bedroom satisfaction\u2026 in terms of furniture, bedding, decor, colour schemes, positioning etc. They too exclaim that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cbedroom happiness awaits you.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Interesting perspective.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><strong>Check this out:<\/strong> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/outside-bedroom-sex-positions\/\">Think Outside the Bedroom with Positions for Every Room!<\/a><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, in November 2016, a couple from Florida decided that uploading videos to YouTube of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/fanning-the-flames-5-couples-exercises-to-increase-intimacy-rekindle-romance\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">exercise routines<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that have elements of the Kama Sutra would be a huge hit\u2026 and that it was. So much so in fact, that their video went viral on various social media platforms.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The idea was conjured up by former USF football player, Micah Morgan, who wanted to combine his passion for fitness whilst creating a stronger bond with his girlfriend. And so, this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=E-i5pMWNdfE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kama Sutra workout video<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shook the world in all its sexiness!\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And last but not least, the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/12287434\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indian Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> used the Kama Sutra text as a means to promote safe sex in 1993.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It focused on the 65 sex positions found in the Kama Sutra to encourage monogomy. This was done by motivating partners to practice different positions from the Kama Sutra in order to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/are-you-victim-to-marital-bed-death\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">keep their sexual relationship alive and interesting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This, in turn, would hopefully reduce the amount of promiscuity and swapping of partners in order to lower the spread of HIV\/AIDS and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/new-sti-havent-heard-yet\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The NGO also chose this route for their campaign in order to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/communication-as-a-tool-for-better-sex\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promote communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, openness, and gender equality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And so concludes our colourful journey into the past\u2014one that still has a big influence on sexuality today.
