This was never going to work. The wedding was just six months away and we hadn\u2019t accomplished anything yet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Okay, I know that isn\u2019t exactly true, but it still\u00a0<\/span>felt<\/span><\/i>\u00a0that way. And at the moment, feeling trumped logic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Sure, we set up our website. We registered for gifts. We sent out the invites. (Which were beautiful, by the way). But still. Our checklist is a mile long. And did I mention we decided to make and do everything ourselves? <\/span><\/p>\n

Yep. No wedding planner for the soon-to-be Mr. and Mrs. Valdez. They were all too expensive and we\u2019re trying to save up to buy a house. Plus we thought this would be a great way to express ourselves creatively. A bonding experience of sorts. We would make our own decorations. Arrange our own center pieces. Design those cool photo booth props for our guests to use during the reception…<\/span><\/p>\n

Everything.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

All of it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I still think we made the right decision and I know in the long run it\u2019ll work out in our favor.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But.<\/p>\n

Sometimes.<\/p>\n

\"lelo<\/a><\/p>\n

Sometimes there are moments when I doubt\u00a0<\/span>just a little<\/span><\/i>. Moments where every surface of our two bedroom apartment seems to be covered in strands of white lace and cutouts of card stock in every shade of blue. And I do mean\u00a0<\/span>every<\/span><\/i>\u00a0shade. Sometimes, at just the right angle, and in just the right lighting, it looks like the sky had fallen.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Moments like\u00a0<\/span>this<\/span><\/i>. Moments where I\u2019m up to my elbows in periwinkle ribbon, tulle, and spools of thread at what\u00a0<\/span>used<\/span><\/i>\u00a0to be our dining room table. It hasn\u2019t been a dining room table in a while now. Now it looked like a sewing machine threw up all over it.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cOw! Motherfu-!\u201d I shake my hand and quickly suck at the blood beginning to well on the pad of my finger.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBabe, are you alright?\u201d I can feel Gaven\u2019s concerned gaze as he peers at me from across the table, already halfway out of his chair.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cYeah,\u201d I mutter from around my finger, my own eyes glaring at the offending needle. I take a deep breath to steady myself. My emotions have been all over the place lately. With all the wedding stress, it doesn\u2019t take much for me to go from zero to sixty. And by zero I mean crying over every little thing. And by sixty I mean getting pissed over every little thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

But no. I refuse to allow this damn needle to be one of those things. Little prick.<\/span><\/p>\n

Gaven kneels beside me and gently takes my hand to examine my finger. \u201cThat\u2019s my sexy vampire,\u201d he smirks. \u201cHardly any blood left.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

I smile weakly at him. \u201cDon\u2019t joke. I\u2019ll blow a gasket if I get blood on this material.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He squeezes my hand a little, before lacing his fingers with mine. \u201cHow \u2018bout we take a break?\u201d He peers up at me through his dark lashes – a mix of hope and mischief dancing in his eyes. \u201cIt\u2019s almost dinnertime anyway.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know. There\u2019s still so much to do\u2026\u201d I slouch back in my chair and tear my gaze from his to look at the sea of fabric on our table. And just like that, our long to-do list looms before me.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gaven reaches up to slowly rub his thumb along my lower lip, freeing it from the clutches of my teeth. I hadn\u2019t realized I was biting it. \u201cAlex,\u201d he intones softly. His thumb slides from my lips to caress my cheek and chin, slowly turning my head away from our disaster of a dining table and toward him instead. I feel the tension leave my body as I relax into his palm and close my eyes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

This is what I need sometimes. What we both need. To remind each other to be in the moment. To live in the here and now when things get stressful and overwhelming.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s go out and call it a night. You shouldn\u2019t be this stressed on your birthday, anyway. Besides, I\u2019ve got a surprise for you.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

My eyes fly open to find him grinning at me. God, my man is sexy. And not just because he\u2019s talking surprises. Although, I\u00a0<\/span>am<\/span><\/i>\u00a0admittedly a huge fan of surprises. But no. It\u2019s not that. It\u2019s the way his hazel eyes light up when he smiles and flash when he\u2019s up to no good. The way his wavy dark hair curls around the tips of his ears and at the base of his neck. The way his golden brown skin warms mine, rain or shine. But it\u2019s not\u00a0<\/span>just<\/span><\/i>\u00a0that either. It\u2019s the way he makes me laugh. The way he challenges me. The way his soul calls out to mine. It\u2019s everything.<\/span><\/p>\n

I lean into him, running my hands up his arms and around his neck, feeling his muscles as I go. \u201cBabe,\u201d I bring my mouth up to meet his in a quick kiss and smile against his lips. \u201cYou already surprised me this morning.\u201d And a lovely surprise it was. I got breakfast in bed, and then some.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cWell, I\u2019ve got another one for you.\u201d Gaven\u2019s eyes dance as his grin broadens even further. \u201cFor both of us really.\u201d I raise my eyebrow, intrigued, inviting him to continue. He brushes his lips lightly against mine before reaching up to grab my hands from around his neck. He gives them a little squeeze before standing up, gently tugging me along with him. \u201cI\u2019ve got dinner reservations. At Pierre\u2019s.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\"lelo<\/a><\/p>\n

\u201cAre you serious?\u201d My eyes almost fall out of their sockets. \u201cHow did- but you-\u201c I\u2019ve apparently lost all ability to speak. I shake my head and try to get a hold of myself. Pierre\u2019s is the fanciest restaurant in town. I\u2019m talking suit and tie, little black dress, high heels, live music, the works. They opened a year ago and we\u2019ve never been able to get a table. I thought things like that only happened (or didn\u2019t happen?) in movies. Boy was I wrong. \u201cBut they\u2019re sold out. They\u2019re always sold out. Like, you\u2019d have to reserve a table waaaay in advance.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cAnd I did,\u201d he smiles proudly. \u201cSix months ago.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I guffaw at him. Actually, guffaw. \u201cWow, Gaven.\u201d I shake my head, stunned. \u201cThank you. You really didn\u2019t have to-\u201c<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cBut that\u2019s not my only surprise,\u201d he cuts in.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cIt isn\u2019t?\u201d I tilt my head to the side.<\/span><\/p>\n

He just smiles and shakes his head, walking backwards into our bedroom, fingers once again laced with mine. As we pass through the doorway, he turns so that I\u2019m the one walking backward. He guides me until the backs of my knees hit the bed and I sink slowly onto the mattress. He winks at me and walks to our closet. I stretch out languidly on the bed, my eyes raking his back, wedding plans already forgotten. I watch as his muscles go taut as he reaches up to grab something on the top shelf. My nerves are on fire and it\u2019s as if he can feel the heat from across the room.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Gaven turns with a smirk and arches an eyebrow. \u201cDon\u2019t get too excited. We\u2019re still going out to eat.\u201d He returns to the bed with two matching black paper bags. \u201cThis one\u2019s for you,\u201d he hands me one. \u201cAnd this one\u2019s for me,\u201d he holds up his matching bag. \u201cWhy don\u2019t you go ahead and open yours first.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Removing the tissue paper, I reach in and pull out a pair of incredibly sexy black lace panties. \u201cMmmm, thanks, babe,\u201d I purr, my eyes flashing back to his. I grin and nod at the black bag still in his hand. \u201cAre you sure you need your own present? I think this one\u2019s a treat for both of us.\u201d I lay it nicely in my lap. \u201cWell, then I guess this next one\u2019s a treat for both of us, too.\u201d Gaven reaches into his bag and pulls out what looks like a tiny key fob.<\/span><\/p>\n

My brow crinkles in confusion. \u201cDid you\u2026 buy me a car?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

He lets out a rich laugh and I can\u2019t help but join in. \u201cNo,\u201d he says. \u201cNot a car.\u201d He presses one of the buttons and I jolt in surprise as the black lace vibrates in my lap. My mouth falls open and I look back up at Gaven, my eyes alight with excitement. \u201cI\u2019d like you to wear that tonight,\u201d he says, his heated gaze holding mine. \u201cAt dinner.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

I can feel my face split into a grin of its own accord. Challenge accepted.<\/span><\/p>\n
