Not too long ago, we published an article entitled, <\/span>What Makes a Good Submissive?<\/span><\/i><\/a> Now, we\u2019re flipping it on its head and asking the question: What makes a \u2018good\u2019 dom?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In actuality, there is no real definition of what makes <\/span>a dom<\/span> or a sub \u2018good\u2019 or \u2018bad\u2019. It\u2019s not as easy as being awarded a gold star for getting an A on a test or being sent to the naughty corner after continuing to chat after being reprimanded not to (although a naughty corner may or may not be appropriate in this context).<\/span><\/p>\n

What makes a dom or a sub \u2018good\u2019 really does depend on the dynamic that two people share, among other things. (this relationship is often referred to as d\/s (dom\/sub.)<\/span><\/p>\n

Then again, there are universal ways in which people should be treated! And so, we\u2019re going to outline the attributes, characteristics, and gestures that are commonly synonymous with being a \u2018good\u2019 dom.<\/span><\/p>\n

Before we dive in however, let\u2019s get the basics out of the way\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n

The BDSM Lifestyle<\/span><\/h2>\n

The terms \u2018dom\u2019 and \u2018sub\u2019 are used within <\/span>the BDSM (Bondage, Discipline, Sadism, Masochism) lifestyle<\/span>. BDSM pertains to a number of different erotic praticises and or role playing<\/a>, and usually, one partner will take on the role as \u2018dom\u2019 and the other, \u2018sub\u2019.<\/span><\/p>\n

Contrary to popular belief, the <\/span>BDSM lifestyle<\/span> is not a violent one. It is also not one that is solely sexual.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In reality, those who participate in BDSM practices are oftentimes seeking a different kind of mental, psychological, physical, and sexual gratification than what is considered mainstream.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

And despite the fact that power plays a big role in this kind of lifestyle, there is generally a lot of respect, nurturing, and communication that happens between those who are participating.<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Dom?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2018Dom\u2019 is short for \u2018dominant\u2019 and it is, in short, when one person has <\/span>full power,<\/span> control, and or influence over another. A dom takes on the responsibility of leading, guiding, disciplining, and protecting its sub (submissive).<\/span><\/p>\n

What is a Sub?<\/span><\/h2>\n

\u2018Sub\u2019 as mentioned, is short for \u2018submissive\u2019 and it is, in short, the receiver of the control, influence, and discipline. A sub is someone who gives consent and conforms to the authority of another (their dom).<\/span><\/p>\n

So, do you identify with one or the other? Perhaps you\u2019re intrigued, maybe you\u2019re just dipping your toe in to test the waters, see if you like it? Or it could be that you\u2019ve been living the BDSM lifestyle and enjoying the d\/s relationship dynamic for quite some time?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Either way, here\u2019s a quick little guide on what makes a \u2018good\u2019 dom\u2026 take notes if you\u2019re a newbie, or simply nod or shake your head if you know what you\u2019re doing.<\/span><\/p>\n

What Makes a \u2018Good\u2019 Dom?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Being a dom may <\/span>seem<\/span><\/i> easy, but it actually requires a lot of intuition, balance, intelligence, self-awareness, compassion, communication, responsibility, and respect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Not only that, but the things that make one \u2018good\u2019 are also subjective depending on the sub, how one handles pre-defined boundaries and rules, and how they <\/span>communicate with each other<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Objectively, being a \u2018good\u2019 dom encompasses:<\/span><\/h3>\n

Being respectful (when in public):<\/b> whether the d\/s relationship is solely for the bedroom or it\u2019s practiced 24\/7, a dom should be respectful of their sub at all times, but especially in front of others (unless otherwise stated). Being belittled or humiliated in public does not show respect.<\/span><\/p>\n

Having a firm grasp of control and what it means:<\/b> a dom whose life has passion, priorities, goals, and aspirations that they\u2019re actively working towards can be an excellent indication of a \u2018good\u2019 dom. Self-discipline and self-control is an important aspect in the d\/s relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Keeping promises:<\/b> being a dom is all about responsibility. If a dom proves that they can stick to their word, be reliable, and accountable, that is a great sign.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sharing kinks:<\/b> while this one is subjective, the success of a d\/s relationship depends on whether both partners are actively interested in and intrigued by the same <\/span>kinds of kinks<\/span>, desires, and exploration.<\/span><\/p>\n

Being open to criticism:<\/b> a \u2018good\u2019 dom will have a nurturing and compassionate side, and in this way, they\u2019re open to communication\u2014be it praise or criticism. They\u2019re also usually very inquisitive, and eager to learn and improve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Creativity: <\/b>some may argue that taking on the role of \u2018dom\u2019 is an art form. A \u2018good\u2019 dom will be inspiring, creative, fun, and playful. They\u2019ll also realise that there is always room for growth, improvement, and new and innovative ways in which to enjoy the d\/s relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n

Kindness:<\/b> one of the most important aspects of the d\/s relationships, is <\/span>aftercare<\/span><\/a>. That is, after play time, the dom will cuddle, talk to, embrace, and or make sure that the sub is comfortable and happy. This is a way in which to show respect and kindness towards their sub, and to let them know that they will not be discarded after play time but rather, cherished.<\/span><\/p>\n

Understanding: <\/b>a dom will wholeheartedly abide by what their sub wants and needs. They will respect their boundaries and limits, and tailor the relationship according to the sub\u2019s comfortability, willingness, and intrigue.<\/span><\/p>\n

Selflessness: <\/b>a \u2018good\u2019 dom will not focus solely on <\/span>their<\/span><\/i> own needs and gaining <\/span>self-pleasure<\/span> or satisfaction. It is about making their sub\u2019s happiness and wellbeing a priority, and not acting in a selfish and self-fulfilling manner.<\/span><\/p>\n

Intelligence:<\/b> a d\/s relationship is not only about physical action, but oftentimes mental stimulation and connection. This is why so many doms are highly intelligent, as they seek intense mental exchanges.<\/span><\/p>\n

Self-awareness:<\/b> a \u2018good\u2019 dom will be able to know their strengths and limitations. They have a firm grasp of who they are, what they want, and how they can achieve their goals while being open to learn and improve.<\/span><\/p>\n

Trustworthiness:<\/b> In order for a d\/s relationship to flourish, trust is one of the most important factors<\/a><\/span>. A dom must too prove themselves to their sub, showing that they genuinely care about and respect them. In this way, the sub\u2019s safety and wellbeing is a priority for the dom.<\/span><\/p>\n

A \u2018Good\u2019 Dom & a \u2018Bad\u2019 Dom<\/span><\/h2>\n

A \u2018good\u2019 dom will gently influence a sub\u2019s thoughts and desires, while being mindful and considerate. They will actively listen to their sub and learn from them in order to create a dynamic that is fulfilling, satisfying, and mutually beneficial.<\/span><\/p>\n

In contrast, a \u2018bad\u2019 dom will mistake being dominant for domineering. They may come across as rude and hungry for control and power regardless of their sub\u2019s needs. They will demand respect while acting disrespectfully, such as using threats, belittling their sub, or going beyond the sub\u2019s limits.<\/span><\/p>\n

Plot Twist: The Dom Doesn\u2019t Really Have All the Control<\/span><\/h2>\n

At a glance, those who are unfamiliar with the BDSM lifestyle may assume that all of the power and control lies in the hands of the dominant\u2026 this is, in fact, not true. A dominant is not the only one in charge.<\/span><\/p>\n

Contrarily, it is actually the sub who holds all of the cards, as it is <\/span>their<\/span><\/i> willingness to give up full control that ultimately allows for the dom to have power and control.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

A \u2018good\u2019 dom will have set boundaries with their sub to ensure that they are always comfortable and safe, and <\/span>consent is a priority<\/span><\/a> in the d\/s relationship. A \u2018good\u2019 dom will not do anything that their sub does not want or desire, and they place the sub\u2019s needs at the same level, or even higher, than their own.<\/span><\/p>\n

Personality Traits of BDSM-Enthusiasts<\/span><\/h2>\n

Interestingly, the number of studies conducted relating to the world of BDSM rose considerably after the novel and film, <\/span>50 Shades of Grey<\/span><\/i><\/a> came out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

One study confirmed that psychological disturbances is in no way linked to those who participate in BDSM practices. In fact, it was found that BDSM-enthusiasts were <\/span>more<\/span><\/i> mentally and emotionally well-adjusted.<\/span><\/p>\n

And interestingly, a different <\/span>study conducted by Wismeijer and van Assen<\/a> on those who live the BDSM lifestyle<\/span>, found that doms and subs both show a higher level of openness when it comes to experience and conscientiousness.<\/span><\/p>\n

Researchers have also found that those who practice BDSM tend to have a higher level of well-being, <\/span>self-esteem<\/span><\/a>, life satisfaction, and are less sensitive to rejection as opposed to those who don\u2019t practice BDSM.<\/span><\/p>\n

Are you, or are you currently in a d\/s relationship with, a \u2018good\u2019 dom?
