{"id":26197,"date":"2019-11-02T13:45:47","date_gmt":"2019-11-02T12:45:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/?p=26197"},"modified":"2019-10-29T13:22:12","modified_gmt":"2019-10-29T12:22:12","slug":"hiv-aids","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/hiv-aids\/","title":{"rendered":"Know Your Status, Get Educated about HIV\/AIDS"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the span of three to four decades, HIV\/AIDS has swept the entire world, making it a pandemic affecting millions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And to think that at the beginning of the 1980\u2019s, medical professionals believed that it was Kaposi\u2019s Sarcoma, a fairly harmless cancer, while seeing cases of pneumonia rise considerably.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1981, the first diagnosis of HIV\/AIDS was made, but still it was not linked to the aforementioned diseases. It was only later that decade that professionals were able to connect the dots and conclude that the symptoms that mimicked Kaposis\u2019s Sarcoma and pneumonia, were in fact happening because of the HIV\/AIDS infection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By 1993, over 2.5 million cases of HIV\/AIDS had been confirmed worldwide.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unaids.org\/en\/resources\/fact-sheet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">UNAIDS<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we are looking at almost 40 million people living with HIV globally, and around one million deaths caused by AIDS-related illnesses in 2018.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while this number is shockingly high, the infection rate has been reduced by 40 percent since its peak in 1997, and the number of deaths occurring due to AIDS-related illnesses has gone down by more than 55 percent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is good news, but there\u2019s still a long way to go&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is HIV\/AIDS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For starters, HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus), and AIDS (Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome), are not the same thing. HIV progresses into AIDS. They both do however compromise one\u2019s immune system and its ability to fight organisms that cause disease in the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV is classified as an <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/dear-lelo-tell-partner-sti\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">STI<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Sexually Transmitted Infection), and is a virus that breaks down certain cells (CD4 or T cells) in the immune system. When it begins to weaken the immune system, that is when it is considered AIDS. People with HIV do not necessarily have AIDS.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is still no cure for HIV\/<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but new kinds of medicine (antiretroviral drugs) have been found to drastically reduce the symptoms and the number of deaths caused by HIV\/AIDS.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How is HIV Spread?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">HIV is spread via bodily fluids namely, blood, semen, vaginal fluid, anal mucus, and breast milk. It is then passed onto others when they have open cuts, sores, or wounds on their skin, or via mucous membrane, like the inside of the vagina, rectum, or head of the penis.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HIV can be spread via:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anal<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or vaginal sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Needle sharing during drug use, tattooing or body piercings<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being jabbed with an infected needle or sharp object<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infected bodily fluids that enter open cuts or wounds<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oral sex <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(but the chances are considerably lower)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood transfusions (although there is almost no risk today as blood is thoroughly tested before transfusion)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common way in which HIV is spread is through unprotected sex, but it can also be spread from mother to child during pregnancy, birth, and breastfeeding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Also, the risk of contracting HIV is three times higher for those who have a pre-existing STI, such as chlamydia, HPV, herpes, hepatitis, etc, and those who are already HIV-positive can actually get infected more than once with a different strain of the virus, known as a superinfection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>HIV is not spread via physical touch, and you cannot contract HIV from:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hugging<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kissing<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (unless both partners have open sores in their mouth, or bleeding gums)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Holding hands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sneezing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shaking hands<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharing a toilet seat or dishes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mosquitoes, ticks, and other insects<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Saliva, tears, or sweat<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also important to note that HIV cannot survive for long outside of the body so it cannot be transmitted after being in the air, water, or on a surface. Also, HIV cannot reproduce once it is outside of the body.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who Should Get Tested for HIV\/AIDS?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cdc.gov\/hiv\/testing\/index.html\">It\u2019s strongly recommended for everyone between the ages of 13 and 64 to get tested for HIV at least once<\/a>. Those who engage in risky (sexual) behaviour should be tested more often, such as every three to six months.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Some examples of risky (sexual) behaviour is if you are:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A man and have had sex with another man<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having or have had unprotected sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sharing needles, or have shared needles during drug use or any other activity<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having, or have had sex with an HIV-positive person<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engaging in casual sex with more than one partner<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Working in the sex industry<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Infected, or have been infected with an STI, TB, or hepatitis\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Get Tested for HIV?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Depending on your location, there are services, clinics, doctor\u2019s offices, and hospitals that will offer HIV tests. Oftentimes, your local clinic will provide you with free HIV testing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To get tested for HIV, the healthcare professional will draw some blood (or take an oral swab). You can either get a rapid HIV test, in which case the results will take around five to 20 minutes, or your <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual healthcare provider<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may send your blood sample away for testing. In the latter case, you\u2019ll have to wait a few days for your results.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The rapid HIV test is when a drop of blood is placed onto a device, and a reading is given accordingly. One line indicates a negative result while two lines indicate a positive result.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Note that it is impossible to detect the virus immediately after infection, and thus adhering to a three-month window period is a safe and good idea.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you go for an HIV test, it is almost always standard practice to have a medical and psychological assessment beforehand. This is when you\u2019ll be asked a few questions such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When was the last time you had sex?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Did you use a condom?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How many sexual partners have you had?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do you have a support system if your results come back positive?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How will you feel if the result is negative or positive?<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These questions are asked in private, and many times you can remain anonymous to reduce feelings of being judged.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Protect Yourself from Contracting HIV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are several ways that you can <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">maximize your safety<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/national-condom-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Always using a condom during sex<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not sharing needles<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Taking PrEP (Pre-exposure Prophylaxis) which is taken beforehand to reduce the risk of contracting or spreading HIV<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early Symptoms of HIV<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The acute infection stage is experienced after contracting HIV, which is when the virus reproduces rapidly. The body then goes into fight mode, and works hard to produce antibodies to get rid of the infection. This may just feel like you\u2019re getting or have a cold, making it hard to detect. After one to two months after infection however, signs may start to appear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The early signs of HIV infection are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fever<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sore throat and swollen lymph nodes<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">General body aches<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rash (around 90 percent of those with HIV see a change in their skin such as small red lesions)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upset stomach and nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Treatment and HIV Management<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, there is no cure as yet for HIV\/<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AIDS<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but there are different ways in which the virus can be managed.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Antiretroviral medications:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> medicine taken daily to help reduce the virus from spreading<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Eat well: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this includes eating lots of fruit and vegetables, lean protein, and whole grains, and lowering your intake of sugar and salt, alcohol, cigarette smoking, and drug use<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Follow food safety:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> always wash your hands before eating, wash utensils immediately, avoid raw egg, make sure all meat is well-done, rinse fruits and vegetables, and be conscious of expiration dates<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Self care: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">try to stay active by exercising, getting enough rest, keeping in touch with your doctor, and relying on your support system<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Psychological Effects of HIV\/AIDS and Mental Health<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those living with HIV\/AIDS are at a higher risk for mental health disorders such as anxiety and depression. In fact, those with the virus are twice as likely to develop one or both or these mental disorders.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is not only because of the virus itself, but because of the social and emotional issues such as not getting the help that they need, losing friends which leads to isolation, facing stigma, being unemployed, and experiencing physical changes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But it is not only those living with HIV\/AIDS who face mental challenges. Those who rely on someone who has HIV\/AIDS may be affected, like a child whose parent has passed away or is unable to take care of them properly due to the virus. This puts them in the position to take care of themselves and their sickly parent or caregiver.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is also a growing trend of substance abuse among those living with HIV\/AIDS as a means to \u2018numb\u2019 the physical and mental effects. Using drugs as a coping mechanism will only compromise your immune system.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who are living with mental health disorders because of their HIV\/AIDS diagnosis, the most important thing is to have a support system. This means having access to medical treatment or free clinics in which to get antiretroviral medications, and perhaps antidepressants if prescribed. It also means having one or more reliable friends or family members who can simply listen and empathise with you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A final note?
