Apps also connect people who normally wouldn&#8217;t be as available to connect, like shy folk and those who travel or work often.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Motivations to get on the apps differ, but they still have a reputation. Many people assume that if you\u2019re using them, especially Tinder, you\u2019re just looking for casual sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a pioneer in the dating app world, Tinder quickly gained a reputation for hookups and has had a hard time shaking it. But that\u2019s not the main motivation for swiping \u2013 so, what is?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doing It for Science<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dating apps are probably one of the best anthropological examples of relationship intentions. They give us data about how people connect with each other, what people are attracted to, and other patterns in relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s explore some of the research.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Before apps began to rule the realm of online dating, we had online agencies and websites. This created the assumption that people using these agencies were looking for a relationship, while those using Tinder and other apps wanted a quick hook-up. One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/23311908.2016.1162414\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> debunked this, claiming that <strong>there actually wasn\u2019t much of a difference in intentions between agencies and apps. The main difference is that those using apps tend to be a younger demographic.\u00a0<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, what are the top reasons people use the apps? A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liebertpub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1089\/cyber.2017.0309\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2018 online survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the top reasons people use the apps were <strong>to have fun and meet new people<\/strong>. Only 4% of people said they were specifically looking for sexual encounters although 72% of men and 22% of women were open to meeting a sexual partner on an app. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study essentially found that <strong>while people were open to having sex with someone they met on an app, that wasn\u2019t their main intention.<\/strong><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not always about meeting people either. Some other <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/articles\/PMC7557852\/#B39-ijerph-17-06500\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that people often use the apps to <strong>boost their self-esteem or out of boredom.<\/strong> Which can be problematic to those who are actually using them to meet people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/scholar.google.com\/scholar_lookup?journal=Telemat.%20Inform.&amp;title=Love%20me%20Tinder:%20Untangling%20emerging%20adults%E2%80%99%20motivations%20for%20using%20the%20dating%20application%20Tinder&amp;author=S.R.%20Sumter&amp;author=L.%20Vandenbosch&amp;author=L.%20Ligtenberg&amp;volume=34&amp;publication_year=2017&amp;pages=67-78&amp;doi=10.1016\/j.tele.2016.04.009&amp;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identified the six main reasons people use Tinder as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Casual sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ease of communication<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Self-worth validation<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thrill of excitement<\/span><\/li>\n<li><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trendiness<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this study, people tend to be <strong>more motivated by love than sex<\/strong> and men were more motivated by casual sex than women were.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To throw in another plot twist, people also use dating apps to <strong>meet new people in a platonic way<\/strong>, especially when traveling or if they\u2019ve moved to a new city. This seems to be more common in queer communities, where there\u2019s more crossover between platonic, sexual, and romantic relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No Shame in Casual Sex<\/span><\/h2>\n<p>There&#8217;s nothing wrong with casual sex if your intentions are clearly communicated and practicing safe sex by getting tested and using barrier methods to protect against <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/dear-lelo-tell-partner-sti\/\">STIs<\/a>, as well as disclosing your status.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Love and sex aren\u2019t mutually exclusive. People may have a casual hook-up that turns into more or people may be looking for a relationship but it ends up just being about sex. You never know how things will turn out, but the right thing to do is to be transparent with how your intentions develop.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To Each Their Own<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, is Tinder for sex or relationships? The answer is there\u2019s no clear answer. Sex and romance are more nuanced than a \u2018this or that\u2019 question can answer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ultimately, dating apps are a tool for connection. They\u2019re often a free way to connect with new people and see what comes from it. Although there is a lot of charge, both negative and positive, around them, at their core, they\u2019re neutral. What matters is how you use them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They\u2019ve now been around for a while and have their own social etiquette. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The reason you decide to use an app is ultimately up to you. What\u2019s most important is that you\u2019re 1) aware of and respecting your own boundaries, and 2) using clear and respectful communication with anyone you connect with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Human relationships are complex and while the apps have given us a new tool, they\u2019ve also arguably made relationships a bit more complicated.
