The early stages of a new relationship can be filled with confusing feelings. One of them that commonly bubbles to the surface is doubt<\/a>. <\/span><\/p>\n

Amongst the excitement, lust, longing, and all the other positive sensations of a burgeoning relationship, there\u2019s also sometimes an expectation that we will be cheated on, and that can lead us to put walls up.<\/span><\/p>\n

That can stop a possibly great relationship before it even really starts. So it\u2019s useful to be able to spot a few little traits in a partner that indicate they might cheat. <\/span><\/p>\n

This is based on a 2019 study out of the University of Quebec, published in an article called <\/span>Understanding extradyadic sex and its underlying motives through a dualistic model of sexual passion <\/span><\/i><\/a>in the Journal of Social and Personal Relationships.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here\u2019s three things to look out for.<\/span><\/b><\/p>\n

Attachment Avoidance<\/b><\/h3>\n

This is exactly what it sounds like: an unwillingness to become too attached. Couples who are happily attached have little trouble finding comprises and effective ways of dealing with the common conflicts that relationships produce. <\/span><\/p>\n

By contrast, people with attachment avoidance will tend to quickly withdraw from any signs of discord. Things to look out for might involving them having a private space that they retreat to when things get even slightly complicated. <\/span><\/p>\n

This can be anything, perhaps a bar that they never take you to, or an office where they can put headphones on and shut everything out. I can even include the silent treatment \u2013 if this happens early in a relationship, it\u2019s a warning sign. <\/span><\/p>\n

Casual Sex<\/b><\/h3>\n

A partner who tries to impress you, or intimidate you, by hinting to the number of sexual partners they\u2019ve had previously is unlikely to be committed. This is more toxic than it sounds. Sure, many people have had multiple partners and it can be a sign that they will use sex to control you, and will seek it elsewhere if they want to. <\/span><\/p>\n

Look out for this one, it\u2019s not just a sign that they will be unfaithful, it\u2019s also an indication that the person values sex cheaply, but still more than real intimacy. Stay away from anyone who even hints at how much sex they\u2019ve had on a first date. Don\u2019t waste your time if you\u2019re looking for something serious.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sex Drive<\/b><\/h3>\n

I know what you think I\u2019m going to say: people with high sex drives<\/a> are more likely to cheat. Nope. The study that this isn\u2019t the case. <\/span><\/p>\n

Instead, it showed that people with high sex drives fall into two categories, which they\u2019ve poetically labelled \u2018obsessive sexual passion\u2019 and \u2018harmonious sexual passion.\u2019 <\/span><\/p>\n

People with harmonious sexual passion consider themselves in control of their sexuality, and choose when and whether to engage in sex. These people, despite their high sex drive, are far less likely to cheat. <\/span><\/p>\n

People with obsessive sexual passion lack that control of their sexuality, and are compulsive. They will give in to sexual urges even if they know there could be negative consequences. These people are much more likely to cheat. <\/span><\/p>\n

Don\u2019t be worried if your partner\u2019s sex drive is high, just try to identify if their sex drive is harmonious, or obsessive. That\u2019s what matters.<\/span><\/p>\n

So, those are three quite deep things to look out for, and this is backed up and provable thanks to the study linked at the start of this article.<\/span><\/p>\n

One particularly interesting outcome, though, regards the issue of gender. We tend to just assume that men are more likely to cheat. Perhaps that was true in the past, but in the relatively large group of subjects, equally male and female heterosexual couples tracked over the course of the year, the rate of infidelity was exactly even. about 13% of men and 13% of women were unfaithful over the year-long duration of the research.<\/span><\/p>\n
