Like cisgender\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Does \u2018Cisgender\u2019 Mean?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Cisgender, or \u2018CIS\u2019 for short (CIS, a Latin-derived prefix meaning \u201con the side of\u201d)\u00a0 is when someone\u2019s gender matches that of the sex in which they were born.<\/strong> So, if you were born a female, you identify as a girl or a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">woman<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and if you were born a male, you identify as a boy or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">man<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But as we know, not everyone\u2019s birth sex aligns with what they identify as their gender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why is the Term \u2018Cisgender\u2019 So Important?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is there a need for a specific term that resembles one who is born a male\/female and identifies as a man\/woman? Why does the word \u2018cisgender\u2019 even exist? In actuality, the word \u2018cisgender\u2019 holds positive connotations for many within the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/lgbtq-pride-month\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">LGBTQ+<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, Queer, +pansexual, +agender, +genderqueer, +bigender, +gender varient, +pangender) community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By making use of the term \u2018cisgender\u2019 we\u2019re actively recognizing that trans people exist. It\u2019s also a way in which to openly express that one is an allie of those who <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belong to the LGBTQ+ community<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For that reason, many feel it to be a good thing when someone identifies themselves as cisgender.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Side note:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Interestingly, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/content\/116\/49\/24480\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> zoned in on 317 transgender children, 189 of these children\u2019s siblings, and 316 cisgender children. These children were asked questions like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow much do you feel like a boy or a girl?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What are your favorite toys and clothes?\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in order to gauge their sense of gender identity.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result showed that the transgender children had a stronger preference for toys and clothes associated with their gender identity (similar to that of the cisgender children), and not their birth sex. This is interesting as it poses the question of nature vs. nurture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThese findings suggest that children might not be simply learning about gender based on what their parents tell them about their own gender or how they treat them early on (which would be about the gender associated with their assigned sex),\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> said Selin G\u00fclg\u00f6z, ph.D, the lead author of the study.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, there are some who believe cisgender individuals experience something called \u2018cisgender privilege\u2019 which is a <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cset of unearned advantages that individuals who identify as the gender they were assigned at birth accrue solely due to having a <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cisgender<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> identity,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Cisgender\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wikipedia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this way, cisgender is given an almost negative connotation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some examples of cisgender privilege may include the belief that:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There is no need for labels, we\u2019re all the same<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender is merely a social construct, thus it\u2019s not important\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender identity is nothing more than one\u2019s personal expression\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while these beliefs could be described as ridiculous by some, there are actually a few valid reasons as to why cisgender privilege actually exists, such as:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> toilets without fearing any kind of abuse, or experiencing anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Strangers aren\u2019t inclined to ask personal questions about your genitals and or sex life<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being able to walk through life without being stared at<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being called the name that you were born with and also identify with<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is Being Cisgender the Same as Being Straight?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No. Cisgender is more so about one\u2019s gender rather than their sexual orientation. For example, there could be two women, one straight and the other <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homosexual<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but both can identify as cisgender.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex, Transgender, Genderqueer, and Gender: What\u2019s the Difference?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><b>sex<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of an individual is indicative of their biological makeup, such as their genitalia and genetics. And as we\u2019ve learned, cisgender individuals are born one sex and continue to live being identified as that sex (born a male, continue to live life as a man, for example).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If one is born a sex with which they do not feel is their true self, they would then identify as <\/span><b>transgender<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, one\u2019s birth sex is a male, yet this person strongly identifies their authentic self as a female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Genderqueer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, on the other hand, is when one person does not identify as either male or female. Instead, it\u2019s a spectrum of gender identities that are neither masculine or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feminine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In this way, gender pronouns such as he, she, him or her are not used, but rather gender neutral pronouns such as they or them. Genderqueer is also known as non-binary.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When it comes to the definition of <\/span><b>gender<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this is more so about how one functions and their roles within their environment and society rather than one\u2019s biological makeup (their sex). Genderfluid is someone who doesn\u2019t identify as having a fixed gender.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Gender Identity, Androgyny, and Gender Roles?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>Gender identity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is merely the gender with which one identifies (male or female). This can be the same as their birth sex (cisgender), the opposite of their birth sex (transgender), or they could be genderfluid (identifying with both or neither).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This then brings us to androgyny.<\/span><b> Androgyny <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is a combination of masculine and feminine characteristics in an ambiguous fashion. In this way, someone is not clearly masculine or feminine.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Gender role <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is the outward manifestations of personality, which is strongly influenced by one\u2019s societal and environmental factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if one identifies as a female, their gender identity would be female. Her gender role will too be female if she chooses to demonstrate behaviours, dress styles, mannerisms and more that is associated with being female.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Oftentimes, however, one\u2019s gender identity and gender role are the same.<\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Where Does Sexual Orientation Fit into All of This?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual orientation is in no way the same as how a person self identifies. There is no way of assuming someone\u2019s sexual orientation based on whether they are cisgender, transgender, or genderqueer.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that reason, sexual orientation is a different entity altogether, and refers to the gender in which one person is (sexually) attracted to.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Herewith, a list of the most common sexual orientations:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/aromanticism\/\"><b>Aromantic<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who are prone to not feeling romantic desire<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/what-is-asexuality\/\"><b>Asexual<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who are prone to not feeling sexual desire or attraction<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/bisexuality-day\/\"><b>Bisexual<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who are attracted to people of both their own and another gender<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/demisexuality\/\"><b>Demisexual<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who tend to feel sexually attracted to others when an emotional connection is formed<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Heterosexual<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who are attracted to others who are of a different gender than their own<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Homosexual<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who are attracted to others who belong to the same gender as their own<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/a-flash-in-the-pan-is-pansexuality-real\/\"><b>Pansexual<\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: Those who can be attracted to others regardless of their sex or gender<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Queer<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: A non-confining sexual orientation for those who feel that no other category encompasses their sexual orientation<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, big apologies if this article has sounded somewhat stiff\u2026 like a scholarly piece rife with definitions.
