The term \u2018androgyny\u2019 may make you believe otherwise.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Does \u2018Androgyny\u2019 Mean?\u2019<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The word \u2018androgyny\u2019 comes from the Greek words, \u2018andro\u2019 meaning man, and \u2018gyne\u2019 meaning woman. <strong>It\u2019s when one person holds both male and female characteristics (or adversely, neither male nor female).<\/strong> <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two kinds of androgyny, physical and psychological.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Physical Androgyny?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical androgyny is when someone holds physical traits that makes their biological sex hard to decipher due to the way in which they represent themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Someone who identifies as physically androgynous often adapts their clothing style and appearance in such a way that their biological sex is unclear.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of physical androgyny would be that of the late Michael Jackson, David Bowie, and Prince.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androgynous Fashion Today<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who are physically androgynous, there\u2019s been a huge rise in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fashion brands<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that actively celebrate androgyny. Today, it\u2019s not so much about hiding or disguising gender, but more so about embracing where one lies on the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/gender-dysphoria-in-the-brain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender spectrum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Psychological Androgyny?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Psychological androgyny is when one person exhibits both masculine and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">feminine characteristics<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi, Psychologist and author of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.goodreads.com\/en\/book\/show\/40389418-creativity\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creativity, the Psychology of Discovery and Invention<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cPsychological androgyny is a much wider concept, referring to a person\u2019s ability to be at the same time aggressive and nurturant, sensitive and rigid, dominant and submissive, regardless of gender. A psychologically androgynous person in effect doubles his or her repertoire of responses and can interact with the world in terms of a much richer and varied spectrum of opportunities.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that, an example of a man who is psychologically androgynous is one who is able to lift heavy weights, change a flat tyre, and watch <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">football<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with the guys whilst enjoying activities like cooking, reading poetry, and gardening.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">An example of a woman who is psychologically androgynous is one who works as a mechanic by day, enjoys competitive sports like wrestling, yet loves finding interior decorating inspiration on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinterest <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in the evenings whilst taking a bubble bath and drinking pink <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">wine<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> cocktails.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In both of these examples, there is no limit when it comes to adapting. Both examples are able to control and adjust their behavior accordingly, and neither feel constricted in their nonverbal <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/5-tips-better-bedroom-communication\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androgyny and Sexual Orientation: Are They Linked?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In no way, shape, or form is being androgynous synonymous of being a certain <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual orientation<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Someone who is androgynous is no less masculine or feminine when it comes to sexuality than those who adhere to strict gender roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androgyny: How Far Have We Come?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since the early 20th century, professionals have been looking at the behaviors and responses of both men and women in such a way to deduce differences between the sexes. These behaviors and responses were monitored using the original masculinity-femininity scale called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psychcentral.com\/lib\/minnesota-multiphasic-personality-inventory-mmpi\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Minnesota Multiphasic Personality Inventory<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (MMPI).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This scale was in no way multidimensional, with masculinity at one end of the spectrum, and femininity on the other end. This essentially meant that one person could either be masculine or feminine, and not hold traits true of both sexes which, back then, indicated that someone was <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mentally healthy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the 70\u2019s rolled around however, professionals began to question this scale, and a new test was brought about by American psychologist, Sandra Lipsitz Bem, called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.psytoolkit.org\/survey-library\/sex-role-bem.html\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bem Sex Role Inventory<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (BSRI). This scale was used in such a way that it was able to assess masculinity and femininity as separate dimensions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, a participant could walk away with one of four results:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High masculinity and low femininity (traditionally masculine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low masculinity and high femininity (traditionally feminine)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">High on both masculine and feminine traits (androgynous)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Low on both masculine and feminine traits (undifferentiated)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androgyny: Celebrities Challenging Gender Stereotypes<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While the acceptance and understanding of androgyny is still fairly new, the 80\u2019s was rife with celebrities who welcomed physical androgyny. Musicians such as Boy George, Annie Lennox, Elton John, Madonna, and Cyndi Lauper actively embraced androgyny, and were praised by many for it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cyndi Lauper, for example, was named one of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women of the Year<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the magazine,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ms<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. in 1985 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cfor taking feminism beyond conformity to individuality, rebellion, and freedom\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while some may argue that these artists imbibed an androgynous appearance as a means to create a stage presence, they actually did make an impact on society. Androgyny in the 80\u2019s encouraged people to think differently, to challenge gender stereotypes, and to question gender roles.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many celebrities today too embrace androgyny, such as Lady Gaga, Adam Lambert, Ellen DeGeneres, Ruby Rose, Cara Delevingne, Miley Cyrus, and Brian Molko.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having said that, these celebrities don\u2019t necessarily hold characteristics that are true of psychological androgyny. Psychological androgyny, in actuality, comes with a slew of positive attributes, especially when it comes to creativity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while physically androgynous celebs may radiate creativity whilst twerking, dying their hair radical colours, and wearing outfits that challenge gender roles, this does not necessarily mean that they are psychologically androgynous. In fact, the motives behind their fashion styles may simply be for the sake of fame.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Androgyny and Creativity<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In 2002, James. B.Hittner, P.hD, and Dr. Jennifer.R. Daniels, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2002-02848-004\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">conducted a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to measure levels of creativity in androgynous and nonandrogynous individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The study found that psychologically androgynous individuals (those who had high levels of instrumentality aka masculinity, and high levels of expressiveness aka femininity) were more accomplished when it came to creativity in the spheres of literature, theatre, and video-photography than those of nonandrongynous individuals.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, Maslow too commented on creativity by saying that creative individuals often have a healthy balance of opposites, such as work-play, maturity-childishness, thinking-feeling\u2026 just like that of psychological androgyny.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s also interesting to note that after 1980, creativity was not only linked to individuals who scored an IQ of 115 or above, but also those who were psychological androgynous.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having said that, creativity and androgyny are not necessarily directly linked, but rather an outcome of an individual possessing positive traits that are both masculine and feminine.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And, as Csikszentmihalyi puts it, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is not surprising that creative individuals are more likely to have not only the strength of their own gender but those of the other one, too.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Positive Effects of Psychologically Androgynous Individuals<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those who identify as psychologically androgynous, here are a few positive things that they may experience:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A wide variety of ways in which to respond to, solve, and communicate challenges or problems without suppressing natural strengths<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More creativity, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/the-importance-of-practicing-self-love-when-youre-newly-single\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">high self-esteem<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, life satisfaction, feelings of wellbeing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Less anxiety<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marital satisfaction and parental effectiveness<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A more adaptable, relatable, and familiar relationship to those of the opposite sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cognitive and behavioural flexibility\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In short, it\u2019s a great time to be alive! Society is becoming more and more accepting, more educated, and more open to discussing gender roles, and sexuality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So even if is all just a big celebrity show, if Adam Lambert wants to rock eyeliner, and Miley Cyrus wants to wear \u2018boyfriend\u2019 jeans and have short hair\u2026 go for it!
