I didn\u2019t learn about what being intersex was in high school, and I didn\u2019t <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> learn about it in college either.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the time, I identified as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/cisgender\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cisgender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> woman (and still am) with a sexual preference for both men and women, but I had no idea that there existed a variety of other sexual orientations and gender identities.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Almost 2% of people have either <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/how-fluctuations-in-hormones-affect-us-more-than-we-think\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hormones<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, chromosomes or physical anatomy that varies somewhere between what has been categorized as male and female. Which is why it\u2019s called intersex\u200a \u2013 \u200ait is <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> a third sex, but rather encompasses a variety of sexual expressions in between what we know to be male and female.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you look at it this way, every single person expresses male and female expressions in stronger and weaker ways. People who identify as female still have male hormones like testosterone, and women who have higher levels tend to develop more body hair, have an enlarged clitoris and have a deeper voice. And people who identify as male still have female hormones like estrogen, and those who have higher levels tend to develop breast tissue and may have trouble getting erect.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s interesting is that doctors don\u2019t even know where the line between intersex and \u201cnon-intersex\u201d is, suggesting that perhaps there really <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> no line\u200a \u2013 only stronger and weaker expressions of male and female characteristics.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One example is a person who\u2019s born with both male and female genitals. At birth, it\u2019s very apparent and more often than not they\u2019re forced into surgery to pick the sex that the doctors or parents feel is the right choice, usually depending on physical anatomy. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28920\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-1-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-1-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-1-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Still, it\u2019s important to know that many intersex advocates are opposed to any genital surgery at birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another example is someone who\u2019s grown up with female anatomy, but when <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/human-sexuality-cycle-by-age\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puberty<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> hits, expressions of male characteristics start to show up. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28921\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-2-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-2-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-2-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel it\u2019s important to be able to understand gender identities beyond male and female, including and especially those who are intersex. We spend so much time seeing male and female parts that it\u2019s no wonder we disregard any other form of sexual anatomy as potential partners. It\u2019s hard to imagine having a partner who\u2019s parts you wouldn\u2019t even know how to touch. It\u2019s scary enough for young people to be intimate for the first time, but at least cisgendered partners have access to learning about their partner\u2019s sexual anatomy. If we had access to that kind of information about intersex people, it would not only demystify the topic, but it would open people up to the idea of having an intersex partner.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few years ago, I thought my <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/bisexuality-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual preference was for males and females<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. After having access to information about intersex individuals, my horizons expanded. All it took was access to education, that\u2019s it. I\u2019m not saying that this would be the case for every single person, but it would certainly open up the opportunity for many people to explore that part of themselves.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28922\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-3-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-3-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-3-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<h3><b>Here are some other important things to know:<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><b>Gender is non-binary.<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since intersex people have the anatomy of both male and female, they don\u2019t always feel like the gender that was assigned to them at birth. Some feel the other gender more strongly and some choose to not conform to any gender at all. This can be called <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender non-conforming<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender fluid<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In these cases, they choose to be referred to by gender neutral pronouns like they\/them\/their or xe, xem, xeir pronounced and sometimes written as ze\/zem\/zeir. Also, it\u2019s not only intersex people who can be gender non-confirming or fluid. Anyone can identify that way!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-4-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-4-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-4-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Sex is possible for intersex people.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what genital expression or gender identity one has, sex and intimacy is possible in many different ways.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Unfortunately, it is still very common that doctors tell intersex people that they won&#8217;t be able to have sex until they have surgery. The surgeries they suggest are not medically necessary, and they force the person to change their bodies with the fear that they won&#8217;t be able to have a normal sex life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28924\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-5-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-5-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-5-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>Are there any intersex-inclusive sex toys?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most sex toys come with gender labels like \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/lelo-recommends-best-g-spot-vibrators\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">G spot vibrator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sona-2-cruise-review\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clit stimulator<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d. Though these toys can definitely be used by an intersex person, it probably won&#8217;t have the same effect as it would if it would be made for their bodies. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28925\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-6-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-6-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-6-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><b>How is sexual health different for intersex people?<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For intersex people, getting good medical care can be very difficult. They can be faced with verbal harassment or denial of care, but even when they are offered care, the healthcare practitioners are often highly misinformed about how to properly care for them. Barely any research has been done besides how to \u201cnormalize\u201d them to fit into male or female standards. Whereas most of us can have answers about our bodies at any doctor\u2019s office, or even just by googling it, intersex people have a really hard time getting clear answers that are free of judgment or shaming.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28926\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-7-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-7-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-7-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/postpartum-passion-sex-giving-birth\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Childbirth<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and fertility is another area which can be hard for intersex people. The lack of education around intersex people makes it hard to get access to health care practitioners who understand intersex childbirth and fertility the way they do about the male and female anatomy.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I feel that the ignorance and intentional withholding of information coming from institutions like healthcare and educational systems rob intersex people of safe healthcare and a comfortable life, as well as robbing all of us<\/span>\u200a \u2013 \u200aintersex identifying or otherwise\u200a \u2013 \u200aof having relationships with one another.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-28927\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-8-1.jpg\" alt=\"intersex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-8-1.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/02\/Untitled-8-1-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Knowing about the variety of sexual anatomies that exist can open up our minds to the normality of variety, and perhaps more people will be open to exploring a partnership with an intersex person just as people are exploring with same-sex partners and polyamory. What was once <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/behind-the-doors-of-psychosexual-therapy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taboo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is now becoming common, and we need to include intersexuality into our sex education so that it, too, can become the norm that it realistically is.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*I\u2019m writing this article to allow others to broaden their understanding about intersexuality.
