Defining Virginity<\/span><\/h2>\n

In many cultures, this is defined as the first time one has penis-in-vagina sex. Some also equate this in women to having their hymen break. But, according to many sex therapists and educators, there are huge problems with these definitions. First, hymens come in all shapes and sizes and many tear\/break from something other than penetrative sex (e.g., athletic activities) and one cannot tell if someone is a virgin or not by looking at their hymen.\u00a0 Second, defining virginity as penis-in-vagina sex is heteronormative.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Also, the word losing implies something is lost.\u00a0 This is quite negative. Thus, in some countries in Europe, the more positive term \u201csexual debut\u201d is used for first time penetrative sex.\u00a0 Still, according to sex therapist and author Laurie Mintz, this is still heteronormative.\u00a0 She says perhaps sexual debut should be one\u2019s first pleasurable encounter with another person.<\/span><\/p>\n

All this aside, for this article, we will still use the term losing one\u2019s virginity and sexual debut as we are focused on the first time a penis goes in a vagina.
