Our sexuality is as unique as our fingerprints. No two people are erotically identical. Some <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/best-new-sex-positions\/\">sexual positions<\/a> are more popular than others, but many practices once considered fringe turn out to be surprisingly widespread.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-31904\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/how-do-americans-have-sex.jpg\" alt=\"how do americans have sex\" width=\"660\" height=\"330\" data-wp-editing=\"1\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/how-do-americans-have-sex.jpg 660w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/how-do-americans-have-sex-300x150.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, we should be very careful about labeling anything \u201cdeviant.\u201d Deviance implies a significant departure from \u201cnormal,\u201d which doesn\u2019t exist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Sexual Fringe Includes Most Americans<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today, what passes for \u201cconventional\u201d lovemaking involves adult heterosexual kissing, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/cuddling\/\">cuddling<\/a>, and vaginal intercourse, with maybe some oral. But most Americans have played in other ways:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Among Americans age 14\u201394, 94% of men and 85% of women admit having <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/reasons-to-masturbate\/\">masturbated<\/a> at least once, and three-quarters of men and two-thirds of women admit having done so during the previous year. The real figures are undoubtedly higher. Masturbation continues to be stigmatized and mocked, so many people don\u2019t admit to it.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than half of American women own at least one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/best-bullet-vibrators\/\">vibrator<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Americans <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/virgin-sex\/\">lose their virginity<\/a> during their late teens, now most typically around age 17 (a year or two later than today\u2019s grandparents did).\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Premarital sex has become almost universal. On their wedding nights, 95% of Americans are not virgins.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Since Kinsey\u2019s studies in the late 1940s, credible estimates of heterosexual Americans\u2019 lifetime infidelity have been all over the map\u2014for men, 12\u201372%, and for women, 7\u201354%. The most comprehensive estimate comes from the University of Wisconsin investigators, who analyzed 500 studies published over 64 years (1943 to 2007). Their estimates for at least one episode of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/when-infidelity-leads-to-sexual-dysfunction-guest-post-dr-tammy-nelson\/\">infidelity<\/a>: 25% of married men and 15% of married women.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At some point in life, 15\u201320% of American men patronize sex workers.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Eleven percent of Americans, some 30 million people, are not exclusively heterosexual.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">By age 50, 40% of Americans have experimented with oral-anal sex (analingus), sphincter massage, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/straight-talk-for-straight-guys-fingering\/\">fingering<\/a>, toy insertions, or penis-anus intercourse.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many elderly lovers can\u2019t accomplish intercourse and instead play with hand massage, oral, toys, and perhaps <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/difference-between-a-kink-and-a-fetish\/\">some kink<\/a>.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approximately 20% of American adults have engaged in consensual non-monogamy: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/is-polyamory-right-for-you-8-questions-to-help-you-decide\/\">polyamory<\/a>, threesomes, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/swinging-tips-advice-beginners\/\">swinging<\/a>, and group sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinky sex is more popular than many believe. Indiana University researchers surveyed 2,021 American adults and discovered that many enjoyed elements of BDSM: spanking (30%), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/the-science-of-submission\/\">dominant\/submissive<\/a> role-playing (22%), restraint (20%), and whipping\/<a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/inside-the-fascinating-world-of-flogging\/\">flogging<\/a> (13%) (Chapter 41). The investigators also found that 43% had played <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/9-ways-explore-exhibitionism-public-play\/\">sexually in public.<\/a><\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fantasy, unconventional sex is even more popular. The number one erotic fantasy is sex with someone other than one\u2019s regular partner. More than half of Americans admit fantasies involving BDSM. Depending on the study, one-third to two-thirds of women admit to fantasies of being sexually forced, with rape fantasies most prevalent among those who feel most comfortable with themselves and their sexuality. In some studies, 60% of adults dream at least occasionally about kinky sex. In fantasy, everything is permitted. Nothing is wrong. And the sky&#8217;s the limit (as long as you can distinguish between fantasy and reality).<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As education increases, Americans tend to be more amenable to sexual experimentation. And compared with religious fundamentalists, religious liberals and those who profess no religious affiliation also tend to be more willing to try sex that&#8217;s considered fringe.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the demographics of sex obscure a greater truth. Anyone can be into anything. Most social conservatives oppose premarital sex, but most acted differently. Conservatives decry abortion, homosexuality, non-monogamy and school sex education, but plenty of conservatives enjoy anal play, sex toys, homosexual play, BDSM, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/find-right-person-threesome\/\">threesomes<\/a> and swinging. There\u2019s even an evangelical swing group in Phoenix, Arizona, called Liberated Christians.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If sociologists know your zip code, education, occupation, religion and income, they can predict with reasonable accuracy your politics, shopping habits, travel destinations and taste in books, TV and movies. But they would know little or nothing about your sexuality.
