But in actuality, it\u2019s more common than you may think! In fact, many individuals have the experience of crying after sex\u2026 for a number of reasons! But before we dive into them, let\u2019s discuss the ins and outs of this occurrence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">First, it\u2019s important to distinguish any crying after sex from postcoital dysphoria (PCD). PCD is when some people inexplicably experience tearfulness, crying, sadness or irritability after sex. It seems most likely to occur during periods of psychological distress, when someone is having a current sexual difficulty or in people with a history of sexual traumas. Thus, while some of the reasons for crying below may fit under the umbrella of PCD, some do not.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Which brings us to the next big question some may have\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Why Do I Cry After Sex?<\/span><\/h2>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Happiness<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Crying after sex doesn\u2019t have to be a bad thing. It could simply be the release of happy tears, like when you\u2019re totally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/using-mindfulness-to-strengthen-your-relationship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">connected with your partner<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014body, mind, and soul\u2014or when you\u2019ve just had the best sex of your life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cCrying after an intense orgasmic release is a great reason to cry,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says clinical sexologist, Claudia Six<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. \u201cIt may just be an additional release of energy, or joy and gratitude at having had such an ecstatic feeling. You can feel out of control, but it\u2019s a release of tension.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being Mentally or Physically Overwhelmed<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sometimes when one engages in something intense or new, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/explore-sexual-role-playing\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">role playing<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or a different kind of sexual fantasizing, it can be an overwhelming experience when it comes to an end.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The journey itself creates a kind of roller coaster full of various emotions. As one goes from feelings of anticipation to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/men-vs-women-why-and-how-do-we-experience-sexual-arousal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arousal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to intrigue then eventually coming back down to earth, the thrill itself can cause tears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physically, experiencing something new or more intense than usual could bring about a crying response. For example, if you squirt for the first time, experience your <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/world-can-find-best-orgasms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">strongest climax<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> yet, or have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/lelo-multiple-orgasms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">multiple orgasms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adversely, you could have built up sexual excitement so much that the experience itself doesn\u2019t meet your expectations. This could lead to frustration and perhaps tears.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there is also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/how-fluctuations-in-hormones-affect-us-more-than-we-think\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the role that one\u2019s hormones play during sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, when one climaxes, dopamine and oxytocin are released (the \u201clove\u201d hormones). After sex, these levels drop, and some hypothesize that the subsequent drop in these levels could cause feelings of sadness.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Past Abuse<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there isn\u2019t much research to indicate that those who\u2019ve experienced past abuse are more prone to crying after sex, there <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">has<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> been a lot of research that says that emotional, physical and\/or sexual abuse in childhood can lead to sexual dysfunction in adulthood.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, sex could pose as a trigger for some, making them feel exposed and vulnerable. Following this, memories of traumatic experiences, or even displaying an emotional response due to the trauma before they\u2019ve consciously acknowledged these memories, may occur.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Physical Discomfort<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conditions such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/painful-penetration-dyspareunia\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dyspareunia<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (pain during penetration) can occur in around 8% of women. Sex can be an intimate act that may bring underlying feelings and emotions to the surface.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As Six says, crying after sex <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201ccan be due to engaging in sex that didn\u2019t feel good to her, physically or emotionally\u2014or maybe she\u2019s not with the partner she\u2019d like to be with.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Or as <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex coach, Gigi Engle, said:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cEvery time I orgasmed, it was like I was releasing the deep emotional anguish of my failing relationship. It was sorrowful, painful, and depressing. Instead of riding a wave of pleasure, I would roll over and quietly weep until I fell asleep, lost in my own head and heartache.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pent Up Emotions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, an orgasm has the power to create drastic changes in one\u2019s mind and body. For some, an orgasm can be stress or emotional release.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, allowing oneself to cry after sex can sometimes be healing. When one is plagued with stress during sex, it can be hard to \u201cswitch off\u201d and really focus on the here-and-now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During sex, one\u2019s body might be in the act, while the mind wanders. This could very well lead to frustration and even <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anxiety after sex, causing one to cry.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Points of stress could be sex-related, such as having performance anxiety (which a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/31447414\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed affects around 6\u201315% of women and 9\u201325% of men). In fact, a link has been found between men who experience stressful sexual issues, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/common-causes-of-erectile-dysfunction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and PCD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Guilt and Shame Surrounding Sex<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are a number of reasons why someone may have feelings of guilt and\/or shame when it comes to sex. Perhaps they were taught growing up that sex was dirty, bad, or wrong. Maybe their religion leads them to believe that it is a shameful act (before marriage) or that one has had negative sexual experiences in the past which has caused them to feel embarrassed or guilty.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could also be more of an internal struggle, such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/boost-bedroom-confidence\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">battling with self-confidence<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or body issues, or feeling as though the kinds of sexual acts one is interested in don\u2019t align with their values or morals. All of these reasons signify a negative relationship to sex and could be a reason why one cries after sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the opposite side of the spectrum, there is such a thing called \u201cdacryphilia\u201d. This is when someone gains arousal from seeing someone else cry, or seeing another display an emotional release that accompanies crying.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In summary, the act of crying is a normal human response to an array of different stimuli. Crying after sex happens and it\u2019s not something to be ashamed about.
