We\u2019re of course talking about the different bases correlating to different levels of intimacy with a partner &#8212; think of a pimply kid breathlessly reporting to his fellow preteens about getting to \u2018second base\u2019 with someone behind the bleachers at school &#8212; that kind of thing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-34095\" src=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/second-base.jpeg\" alt=\"second base\" width=\"850\" height=\"425\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/second-base.jpeg 850w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/second-base-300x150.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/second-base-768x384.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/second-base-660x330.jpeg 660w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was always just sort of assumed that first base was kissing, and making it all the way to home plate was sex; however we all know that there are so many things that can happen between kissing and sex! So where do <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/lending-a-helping-hand-how-to-give-the-perfect-hand-job\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">handjobs <\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/straight-talk-for-straight-guys-fingering\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fingering<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fall in this sliding scale? What about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/10-facts-about-fellatio-that-will-blow-you-away\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">giving a blowjob<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/pussy-eating-101\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">eating pussy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? Seems to us that this particular methodology needs an update, however here\u2019s the traditional rundown of the \u2018Bases of Romance\u2019 or whatever they\u2019re called where you\u2019re from:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>First Base:<\/strong> Kissing, over-the-clothes touching, and fondling<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Second Base:<\/strong> Under-the-clothes touching, fingering, or handjobs.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Third Base:<\/strong> Oral sex\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><strong>Home Plate: <\/strong><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Full-blown, penetrative sex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you can see, the baseball analogy for sexual involvement is a very inaccurate measurement. For instance, touching someone under their clothes and even under-the-bra fondling is still pretty far off from fingering or giving someone a handjob, isn\u2019t it? Luckily for the adults in the room, we know that this has always been a silly little way for kids to talk about sex within easily understood boundaries.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As you get older and more mature, you realize that compared to what you think you might know, love, lust, and romance are a whole different ball game &#8212; see what we did there? Well, it\u2019s true: a little time and experience allow you to understand that there\u2019s much more nuance to sex than just four different, kind-of-arbitrary levels.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, when you\u2019re hearing of a friend\u2019s great date they had the other night, you\u2019re likely not wondering whether or not they ended up feeling each other up. You\u2019re much more likely to wonder \u2018was he nice?\u2019 or \u2018how did he treat the wait staff at the restaurant?\u2019, which are basically better indicators of whether or not they\u2019ll be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/are-you-sexually-compatible\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">compatible lovers<\/span><\/a>,<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to begin with. For adults, the bases system is much more likely to break down as follows:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>First Base:<\/strong> Clarifying intentions &#8212; making it clear that you want to sleep with the other person, and learning that<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Second Base:<\/strong> Making plans to be alone together &#8212; when you\u2019re both angling to get each other alone to make good on these intentions from first base.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Third Base:<\/strong> Being intimate together &#8212; this is where the actual sex and foreplay aspect comes in, and encompasses all acts, from kissing to full-blown penetrative sex.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><strong>Home Plate:<\/strong> Deciding to do it again &#8212; the ultimate \u2018goal\u2019 of intimacy isn\u2019t necessarily just the sexual act itself, as much as it is the willingness of both partners to want to do it again and again.
