As we know, sexuality is fluid and while one may very well feel as though they are 100 percent <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heterosexual<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or 100 percent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/whats-wrong-with-the-term-same-sex-couples\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">homosexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, the majority of us actually fall on the spectrum of sexuality.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cue: the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8230;<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><strong>What Is the Kinsey Scale?<\/strong><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was developed by sexologist and biologist Alfred Kinsey, and was introduced to the world in 1948 when he and his colleagues had their book published, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual Behavior in the Human Male<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. At this time, it was called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was quite a breakthrough, and rather shocking for some, as it was the first time that people were introduced to the idea that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/things-you-dont-want-to-know-about-sexual-attraction\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual attraction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was not limited solely to heterosexuality or homosexuality. It was a time that shed light on sexual fluidity, and that most people couldn\u2019t actually be strictly characterised as \u201cstraight\u201d or \u201cgay\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sexuality scale came about after Kinsey and his peers interviewed thousands of individuals, talking to them about their preferences, thoughts, and feelings. Kinsey alone managed to interview 8,000 people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He found that 37 percent of the men interviewed had experienced a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">same-sex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> encounter. For unmarried men, this number was higher, at 50 percent, by the age of 35. For women, 13 percent had had a same-sex experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this information, Kinsey created the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heterosexual-Homosexual Rating Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which today is called the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>How Does the Kinsey Scale Work and Where Do You Fall on the Kinsey Scale?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ranges from zero to six, with an additional category called \u2018X\u2019. It is a self-diagnostic test, which means that you yourself can decide where you fall on the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>The various ratings on the <\/b><b><i>Kinsey Scale<\/i><\/b><b>:<\/b><\/p>\n<p><b>0: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exclusively heterosexual behaviour or attraction.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>1: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predominantly heterosexual with a slight inclination to be attracted to the same sex or engage in same-sex activity.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>2: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predominantly heterosexual, more inclined to be attracted to someone of the same sex, or to engage in same-sex behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>3: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Equal heterosexual and homosexual behaviour or attraction, aka \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/bisexuality-day\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">bisexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>4: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predominantly homosexual, but a bit more likely to be attracted to the opposite sex or engage in heterosexual behaviour.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>5: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Predominantly homosexual, only slightly inclinded to be attracted to the opposite sex or engage in heterosexual behaviour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>6: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exclusive homosexual behaviour or attraction<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>X:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> No socio-sexual contact or attraction, aka \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/whats-asexuality-like\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">asexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With this information, you could assign yourself a spot on the scale as there is no \u201cofficial\u201d test available. But it\u2019s important to realise that there are limitations to this test, and that one\u2019s sexuality can change over time.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>What Are the Limitations of the Kinsey Scale?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As mentioned, humans have the capacity to change sexually over time, which is already a big limitation to assigning yourself a spot on the scale. Doing so could actually be detrimental, as it may make you believe it to be an \u201cofficial\u201d result, and thus may make it harder for you to <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">experiment<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or experience other kinds of sexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aside from that, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> only accounts for heterosexuality, homosexuality, bisexuality, and asexuality. It doesn\u2019t however account for those who identify with other orientations such as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/a-flash-in-the-pan-is-pansexuality-real\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pansexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/what-is-demisexuality\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">demisexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, graysexual, polysexual, and more. It also doesn\u2019t account for those who identify with certain romantic orientations such as a demiromantic, panromantic, grayromantic, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there\u2019s the fact that this scale assumes that heterosexuality and homosexuality are opposite. In this way, people are led to believe that the more they identify with one orientation, the less they\u2019ll identify with the other. Today, however, we\u2019ve learned that sexual orientation is an independent construct.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another limitation of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is that it assumes that gender is binary. The scale uses the assumption that individuals identify as either a man or a woman, which excludes <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/gender-isnt-binary\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">non-binary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, intersex, or other gender identities.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And then there\u2019s also the fact that the<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> doesn\u2019t account for differences between romantic and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/pride-dr-zhana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual orientation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Individuals are able to feel sexually attracted to people of a certain gender yet romantically attracted to people of a different gender.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>The Impact of the Kinsey Scale\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, and despite its limitations, the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had a massive effect on the U.S. when it first came out in 1948.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of it, every single state in the U.S. outlawed homosexuality because it conflicted with sodomy laws. Not just that, but homosexuality was added as a mental health disorder in the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Diagnostic and Statistical Manual<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While these are the negative effects of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there were some positive effects that came about due to its creation\u2026<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It introduced people to a new way of thinking about sexuality, and led people and professionals to do more research on the construct of sexual orientation and sexual experiences.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kinsey Scale<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> also encouraged more than 200 other scales to come to fruition regarding one\u2019s sexuality. One of these is more comprehensive, namely <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/bi.org\/en\/klein-grid\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Klein Sexual Orientation Grid<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Regardless of which kind of scale you use, or if you reject the idea of using a scale to determine your orientation, everyone should know that sexuality is fluid and that it can change at any time.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thus, using these scales may be fun or interesting, but it\u2019s best not to use it to \u2018label\u2019 yourself or allow it to define you as a person for the rest of your life.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Have you ever questioned your sexual orientation, despite being quite grounded in the fact that you belong to or do not belong to a certain one?
