If you identify with some of the symptoms and information below, we strongly suggest visiting your gynecologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This disorder can have some terribly uncomfortable side effects, and we all deserve to manage and make our lives as enjoyable as possible\u2026 and that includes our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex life<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Endometriosis?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/talk-about-endometriosis\/\">Endometriosis<\/a> is when all or parts of the endometrium grow outside of your uterus. In those without endometriosis, the endometrium lines the uterus, and plays an important function in reproduction such as the menstrual cycle and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pregnancy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/endometriosis-and-pcos\/\">Polycystic Ovary Syndrome<\/a> (PCOS) is a hormonal condition that causes similar side effects, so keep that in mind when talking to your gynecologist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With those who have endometriosis, the tissue still functions as it should. However, during menstruation, there is nowhere for the endometrial tissue that is outside of the uterus to go to exit the body, and thus it becomes trapped.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This disorder can become worse when surrounding tissue becomes irritated, creating scar tissue and adhesions, causing pelvic tissue and organs to stick to each other. If this happens, there is potential to induce bouts of intense pain, especially during one\u2019s period (dysmenorrhea).<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Are the Symptoms of Endometriosis?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><b>The most common symptoms of endometriosis include:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painful periods\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fatigue<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bloating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Nausea<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain during sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Painful bowel movements or urination\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Excessive bleeding during and in between menstrual periods<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s important to note that the severity of the pain isn\u2019t always an indication of the extent of your condition. Mild endometriosis may come with chronic pain, and advanced endometriosis may come with little or no pain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while one could possibly connect the dots using this list of symptoms and visiting their healthcare professional, there is no exact cause of endometriosis.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Link Between Endometriosis and Painful Sex<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many women, having endometriosis means experiencing pain during <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">penetrative sex<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is especially true if endometriosis is behind the vagina in the lower uterus. During penetration, irritated tissue can be stretched, which then creates agonizing discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pain during penetration can create <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/doubt-in-a-relationship\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">tension in relationships<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a lower desire to have sex, and anxiety surrounding intimacy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Endometriosis: How to Ease Pain During Sex\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While there is no magical cure or remedy for pain during sex while living with endometriosis, there are some ways to ease the pain or discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned, intimacy can be disrupted in relationships due to painful penetrative sex. It can cause feelings of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sex-and-anxiety-casey-tanner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for both partners. And even though talking about endometriosis may be stressful or difficult, relaying your experience to your partner may help them to understand how you\u2019re feeling, and why you\u2019re not as inclined to be intimate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visit Your Doctor<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sexual health is important, so talking with your doctor about painful sex and\/or your endometriosis is essential. Your doctor may be able to prescribe <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">medication<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or suggest activities that can help you control your endometriosis. They may also recommend that you have laparoscopic surgery, which will remove as much of the tissue outside of the uterus as possible.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Try New Positions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re with someone who is understanding and open to experimenting new ways to enjoy intimacy together, why not try <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/best-new-sex-positions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new positions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? For some women, only certain positions cause pain, leaving room for a change up in the bedroom. For example, shallow penetration during side-by-side spooning may be a good option for those who endure pain during sex. You may also want to have slower, more sensual penetration to ease some of the discomfort.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Foreplay is <em>The<\/em> Play<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penetrative sex is not the be-all and end-all when it comes to sex. In fact, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/ways-men-and-women-can-use-a-vibrator-during-foreplay\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">foreplay<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is important in any relationship, as it allows both partners to become more relaxed and aroused. Things such as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/mastering-the-art-of-tantric-massage\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensual massage<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, using toys, and oral stimulation are perfect ways to enjoy intimacy. This aside, when partners put all of their focus on penetrative sex and orgasm, it can create problems. For example, when two people are constantly trying to achieve orgasm as a means to \u2018end\u2019 sex, it takes away from the journey, the sexual build-up, and excitement. And don\u2019t forget that most women need some kind of clitoral stimulation for sheer sexual bliss anyway, so you may as well face the music that foreplay is thee play.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Use More Lube<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A lot of people tend to underestimate lubricant, believing that it\u2019s merely an aid for those who have vaginal dryness or for those who enjoy <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/why-anal-play-can-feel-good-for-every-body\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anal play<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. But actually, there\u2019s a lot to love about an extra slippery glide! And for those with endometriosis, lube is even more important, as the condition itself may cause dryness. Opt for a vaginal lubricant made especially for vaginal dryness to help ease some of the pain attached to endometriosis, but make sure that it is condom-safe (if you\u2019re using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/hex-original-hex-respect-xl-choose\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">condoms<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Timing<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some, it may be less painful to have penetrative sex in the week after ovulation, or in the two weeks following a period. This, of course, doesn\u2019t apply to all women with endometriosis, but it is worth experimenting. There is even some evidence to suggest that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.intimina.com\/blog\/eating-for-endometriosis\/\">certains foods are better for you at different times of your cycle<\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Relaxation Techniques<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Feeling anxious before intimacy is a reality for many people, not just those living with endometriosis. This is why performing one or two relaxation techniques may help ease the stress as well as the pain.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0For example, you could take a warm bath to relax the body, you could take pain medication one hour before penetrative sex, or you could <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sexual-meditation\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">meditate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, light scented candles, or do breathing exercises that may help you unwind.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, while endometriosis and its symptoms can be extremely difficult, it can be managed.
