And while eye contact does play a positive role in how people perceive you upon first interaction, locking eyes has the power to enhance all kinds of interactions<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be it in friendships, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">relationships<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, work connections, and more.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s take a little look at how eye contact can influence a slew of different areas in your life, and ways in which you can optimise your eye contact game for better social, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, professional, and intimate connections.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Eyes Don\u2019t Lie: The Power of Eye Contact<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A recent <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S0747563219304376\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> examined the role that eye contact plays when it comes to romance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The researchers used three different methods in the realm of real life speed <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: face to face, video communication with eye contact, and video communication without eye contact.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They wanted to see whether eye contact had any effect on the development of romantic attraction, and if it played a role in reducing uncertainty within initial romantic interactions.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They had their test subjects indulge in forms of self-disclosure and question-asking, which would then give them results as to whether eye contact increased and decreased the chances of romance.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The results revealed that eye contact had no direct effect on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/the-science-behind-long-love\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romantic attraction<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but that it did aid in less uncertainty and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/ways-sex-enhances-intimacy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more intimacy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This reduction in uncertainty and increase in intimacy, according to researchers, is because eye contact is a power non-verbal form of expression, and it tends to prompt self-disclosure (i.e. telling someone more about themselves).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To further prove this point, it was found more probable that those who did not engage in eye contact asked more questions in an attempt to reduce uncertainty. Eye Contact Helps Recognise Emotions<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They say that the eyes are the window to the soul, and it\u2019s true\u2014even a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">smile<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> can be distinguished as real or fake simply by looking at the eyes. A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0956797616687364\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggests that humans gauge how others are feeling by analysing their eyes. Not just that, but a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC3769395\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2013 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> revealed that, during eye gazing, activity in the amygdala increases. This is the part of the brain that helps us recognise facial cues and people\u2019s emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Eye Contact Increases Intimacy<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Just as we mentioned the increased levels of intimacy in the 2020 study, a separate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/0092656689900202\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study conducted in 1989<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had the same result. It was found that when two strangers looked into each other\u2019s eyes for two solid minutes, they both experienced mutual feelings of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">love<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Interestingly, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/14608360\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2003 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that, the longer someone stares at another\u2019s face, the more attractive they become. Then, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/13506280902965599\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2009 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of 32 men found that when women had direct eye contact with them, they were deemed more attractive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Eye Contact Builds Trust<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is it possible to tell if someone is trustworthy or if they\u2019re lying, simply by looking into their eyes? Perhaps! A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0162291\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2016 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that the majority of people are more likely to believe someone when they\u2019re looking straight at them. The study also found that those who disagreed with a statement were slower to do so when it was said with a direct gaze. This suggests that believing a statement to be false may be inhibited when that statement is accompanied by direct gaze.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Eye Contact Increases Connection<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1080\/00221309.2018.1469465\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research conducted in 2017<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> had some interesting conclusions on how eye contact can increase connection. It found that eye contact could merge one\u2019s perception of self-other. Self-other is the ability to distinguish between their own actions, perceptions, sensations, and emotions, and those of others.
