But just for good measure:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Transgender<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a general term that describes people whose gender identity (sense of themselves), or their internal sense of being male, female, or something else, does not match the sex they were assigned at birth.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To de-transition means that one has already transitioned but then returns to live as their gender assigned to their birth sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Conversely, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/cisgender\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cisgender<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is a term used to describe those whose gender identity aligns with the sex they were assigned at birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gendergp.com\/detransition-facts\/#:~:text=On%20average%2C%2097%25%20of%20people,with%20their%20decision%20to%20transition.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> shows that, on average, around 97% of those who have transitioned are happy, there is a small percentage of those who de-transition for a number of reasons.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trans People Who De-Transition<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the aforementioned study, 3% of trans individuals felt feelings of regret or dissatisfaction after transitioning. Interestingly, of that 3%, 90% of these negative feelings around transitioning had to do with pressure from family, school, work, or society in general.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things such as not receiving support at home, or experiencing harassment or discrimination at their workplace or in society had a huge impact on those who decided to detransition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The other 10% revealed that they de-transitioned because they wanted to explore different gender identities, had unrelated health issues, or they experienced financial difficulties. And, of the total of participants, 0.4% decided that transitioning was not right for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll take a closer look at why some trans individuals choose to detransition in a moment, but firstly, let\u2019s take a look at gender dysphoria.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Gender Dysphoria?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/gender-dysphoria-in-the-brain\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gender dysphoria<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is when someone feels a sense of unease because their gender identity and their biological sex does not align.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Experiencing gender dysphoria can be extremely harmful, stirring up feelings of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sex-and-depression\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">depression<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and anxiety, leading to a harmful impact on one\u2019s daily life.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In traditional research, there are two types of gender dysphoria; early-onset gender dysphoria and late-onset gender dysphoria.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early-Onset Gender Dysphoria<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Early-onset gender dysphoria typically manifests in early childhood. It is when a child shows a strong interest in things such as clothing, toys, and behaviours that have been marketed and socially \u2018acceptable\u2019 for the opposite sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It could also manifest in a child forming friendships predominantly or solely with those of the opposite sex, while other young children have same-sex friendships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cedars-sinai.org\/newsroom\/most-gender-dysphoria-established-by-age-7-study-finds\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2020 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by researcher, urologist, and director of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cedars-Sinai Transgender Surgery and Health Programme<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, Maurice Garcia, MD, found that most early-onset gender dysphoria occurs around the age of seven.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late-Onset Gender Dysphoria<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Late-onset gender dysphoria occurs at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">puberty<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or later, but does not particularly mean that one had not had any inclinations towards gender dysphoria prior to this time. For example, a child may have resisted the urge of gender nonconformity until adolescence.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Interestingly, almost all cases of late-onset gender dysphoria involved those who were assigned male at birth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, there\u2019s also something called \u201crapid-onset gender dysphoria\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What is Rapid-Onset Gender Dysphoria?<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rapid-onset gender dysphoria is when one suddenly feels discomfort with their assigned <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gender<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This kind of gender dysphoria is actually more common than one might think. In fact, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0202330\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2019 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted on parents showed that about 80%of their children (with a mean age of around 15 to 17) had announced their transgender identity \u201cout of the blue\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sadly, rapid-onset gender dysphoria was linked to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/mental-health-and-sexual-minorities\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> issues, as well as a worsening of relationships between parent and child. It was also linked to more isolation, and a distrust of non-transgender resources.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specific Reasons Why Some Trans People Want to De-Transition<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Going back to why some trans people decided to de-transition, a comprehensive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gendergp.com\/detransition-facts\/#:~:text=On%20average%2C%2097%25%20of%20people,with%20their%20decision%20to%20transition.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">facts and statistics resource was published in 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It looked at over 27,000 people and the reason why they decided to de-transition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">36% faced pressure from parents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">33% faced difficulties surrounding their transition<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">31% faced harassment and discrimination\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">29% faced employment issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">26% faced issues with their family<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">18% faced relationship issues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">17% faced peer pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, 5% and below de-transitioned because they experienced pressure from religious groups, had financial or medical reasons, they felt as though their transition didn\u2019t reflect the complexity of their gender identity, and\/or they felt gender transition was not right for them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To face the most common reason for those who de-transition, pressure from their parents, we encourage parents to realise that when their children explore their gender identity, it is a healthy and important development.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supporting them, especially younger children, can be as easy as simply reading more literature, and looking out for them in a caring manner if they want to experiment with, and make changes, in the realm of social transition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is, allowing them to dress and behave in a way that comes naturally to them. This will give them a safe space to decide whether medical transitioning is right for them or not.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is the Medical Community Failing Those Who De-Transition?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/prsgo\/fulltext\/2021\/03000\/regret_after_gender_affirmation_surgery__a.22.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that around 1% of transgender people regret having gender-affirmation surgery. It leaves us to ponder: are people not de-transitioning because they\u2019re not supported by the medical community, or are they simply too ashamed to do so?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, looking at the former, an interesting article published on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">WebMD<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> wrote of how those who de-transitioned (or wanted to de-transition) were supported (or not) by medical professionals.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The advisor of the meeting, Stella O\u2019Malley, psychotherapist, spoke of this by saying, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThis is a minority within a minority.\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She said that too many people were dismissing the stories of detransitioners, and that detransitioners have been <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cundermined and dismissed\u201d.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And while this forum was not a scientific study but rather a forum for professionals, it was noted that little to no studies have actually been conducted on detransitioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was also noted that those in the transgender community felt a lot of fear, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">guilt<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and struggles when they wanted to detransition.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt\u2019s embarrassing and you feel ashamed and guilty,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says Sinead Watson, an individual who detransitioned. She continued to say that many professionals, such as doctors and therapists, often don\u2019t listen to their patients when it comes to detransitioning.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThey just didn\u2019t want to speak about detransition and it was like a kick in the stomach,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> she said, after having visited a therapist.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another attendee of the forum, Carol, even went as far as to say,<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cI would tell somebody to not go to a therapist.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In other words, the forum concluded that, with transition regret on the rise, there needs to be professionals who are prepared so that there is a level of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/importance-trust-bdsm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">trust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and support.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that, it\u2019s important for everyone\u2014parents, friends, family members, institutions, and professionals\u2014to be more supportive and to get educated on things such as gender dysphoria, transitioning, and detransitioning.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The lack of support seems to be a huge reason as to why some don\u2019t ever transition or detransition, and this is ultimately not allowing one to be their authentic self and live their truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Related Articles<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/whats-asexuality-like\/\">What&#8217;s Asexuality Like?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/what-is-demisexuality\/\">What is Demisexuality?<\/a><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/intersexuality\/\">Defining Intersexuality<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>If you\u2019ve decided to read this article, the chances that you know what the term \u2018transgender\u2019 is, are high.
