In fact, having a negative body image is one of the biggest disrupters of sexual enjoyment, and can be detrimental to feelings of sexual desire and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/men-vs-women-why-and-how-do-we-experience-sexual-arousal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arousal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quite honestly, however, it is more so women that have the issue of their body image affecting their sex life. And while we don\u2019t negate the fact that men too can suffer from a disruption in their sex life because of how they see their body, today we\u2019ll be focusing more on women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And to get us started, let\u2019s take a look at what <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.researchgate.net\/scientific-contributions\/Ann-Kearney-Cooke-2120811313\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ann Kearney-Cooke,<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> PhD, has to say:<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWomen with a poor body image don\u2019t initiate sex as often, and they\u2019re more self-conscious\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. She continued to note that if a woman is preoccupied with how her body looks, with an internal monologue of \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How does my stomach look?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have they noticed my cellulite?\u201d,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the focus won\u2019t be on <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desire<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and it\u2019ll be like having a third unwelcome person in the room.<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body Image and Your Sex Life<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting more into the topic, there are two types of negative body image that may affect a woman: the way that she sees herself, and how she <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">believes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> others see her.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body Image: How She Sees Herself<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a woman believes that her body is unattractive, it often results in a lower sexual self-esteem which could lead to avoiding sexual activity altogether. And with that, other areas of the sexual cycle can too be disrupted, such as how she experiences desire, arousal, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/new-research-on-the-female-orgasm\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">orgasm<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not just that, but when a woman has a negative body image, especially about her size, it becomes a source of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/female-performance-anxiety\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxiety<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> when it comes to being touched or seen. This can directly impact how she enjoys sexual experiences, rarely being able to truly let go, gain arousal, and enjoy the moment for what it is.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This sad truth is often the case for many women, leading to a lack of orgasming and an overall negative experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Body Image: How She <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Believes<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Others See Her<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many women, believing that others, such as a partner or prospective partners, find her attractive usually results in a higher <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual functioning<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Unfortunately, if the opposite is true, there can be a disruption in her ability to get aroused, to be physically intimate, or to climax.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a woman doesn\u2019t feel desired because of her body, it can lead to a lower libido. And as researcher <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.unlv.edu\/people\/marta-meana\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Marta Meana<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says, for many women, \u201cbeing desired <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the orgasm\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But alas, in this scenario it is merely a belief, and not a fact. The following, however, is a fact\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A Poor Body Image Can Start at a Very Young Age<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many women, a poor body image is rooted in childhood. For example, if a young girl found that others responded to her body in a negative way, this experience can become internalised.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, if you weren\u2019t embraced as a child, or if you were criticised about your body. Then there\u2019s also something called projection, which is when a parent or someone else in your life didn\u2019t like what they saw in the mirror and thus began projecting their insecurities onto you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, of course, there are the beauty standards of society that continue to throw propaganda in our faces about the \u201cideal\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">body<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> type. Which, in actuality, is warped and inaccurate, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/core.ac.uk\/download\/pdf\/234652281.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, in 1979, fashion models weighed eight percent less than the average female, and in 1999, models weighed 23 percent less than the average female.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Things like this play a huge role in how women see themselves and it\u2019s a fertile place for self-doubt and shame to grow. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWe\u2019re bombarded with messages suggesting that our bodies and looks not only represent our self-worth but also are fundamentally flawed. Of course that affects our self-esteem,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/revisedessays.com\/advertising-ethics-dittrich-liz-ph-d-about-face-facts-on-the-media-about-face-1996-2004-this-article-talks-about-how-advertising-promotes-the-cultures-current-for-body\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Liz Dittrich<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, pHd.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5217824\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that focuses on middle-aged women showed that those who had a negative body image had a significant negative relationship with sexual satisfaction, sexual function, and sexual desire.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study proved that body image is an important aspect of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sexual-health-dr-zhana\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexual health<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and that women with a positive body image have higher sexual functioning than those with a negative body image.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Then, let\u2019s look at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5005305\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a different study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that looked at the relationship between body image and domains of sexual functioning among heterosexual, emerging adult women. It showed that a poor body image was linked to detrimental sexual functioning, and a decrease in desire and arousal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study suggests that interventions to improve body image could have incredible benefits related to the sexual experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How to Address Your Negative Body Image and Have Better Sex<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While each person is different, there are some things you could do to address your negative body image, hopefully resulting in better sex. Sex aside, knowing your worth and your beauty is important.<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Decrease negative self-talk<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: the way in which you talk to yourself matters. The brain is the most powerful organ, and by decreasing negative self-talk and practising positive affirmations, you have the ability to change the way you think about yourself.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Believe your partner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: a lot of women tend not to believe positive things their partner has to say about them, which may cause them to reject their partner, leading to frustration.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Mindfulness &amp; meditation<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: take the time to sit peacefully and allow any thoughts to come into your head without accepting them as true. Instead, take a look at and examine those thoughts, and realise that they may just be that: thoughts.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Kegel exercises<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: if you practice <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/should-you-be-doing-kegel-exercises\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kegel exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> during sex, you could place your focus on the action rather than your body and your wandering thoughts.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Focus on your partner<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: it can be quite arousing to see a partner who is visibly turned on. Take note of your partner&#8217;s body language and verbal cues, which may help you to know that they\u2019re having a great time.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Identify where your body image issues come from<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: this may take some practice, but allow it to be a learning and growing experience. Try to think back to why you may have this negative body image in the first place. Take note of why it\u2019s stayed with you, and where it\u2019s coming from\u2014is it your inner critic, a parent, a partner?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Remind yourself that all bodies are beautiful<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: luckily, society is embracing different body types more than ever. Try to focus on these kinds of messages.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Follow people who look like you<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: if you use <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, follow and interact with people who you can identify with and possibly learn from.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Engage with body positive individuals<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: there are a number of body positive influencers, brands, and celebrities out there whose voice could help you to realise just how beautiful you are, as is.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope that you\u2019ve learned a bit more about how the way you see your body can affect your sex life.
