Today, dating is predominantly done via technology, aka using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/dating-apps-tips\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dating apps<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And even though there are a slew of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hollywood<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> films that lead us to believe that online dating is an actual revenue in which to find love and companionship (think \u201cYou\u2019ve Got Mail\u201d), are we actually in an era where dating just isn\u2019t really \u2018a thing\u2019?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Are people simply jumping onto dating apps as a means to find <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hookups<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sex? Or are they actually looking for \u2018the one\u2019? Let\u2019s see what studies have to say\u2026\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Is \u201cHooking Up\u201d the New Dating?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To answer this question, we refer to one of the largest and most inclusive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/32530721\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies of hookups<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> ever published.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study was done by sociologists at Clemson University, and looked at over 10,000 students at 22 different colleges and universities across the U.S. Their findings were oddly surprising.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>They found that:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite the method of dating being different today as opposed to pre-Internet days, the connections look a lot like dating<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most participants had only hooked up with another a few times a year<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those who belonged to a fraternity or sorority house were more likely to hook up more than those in other housing when <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">alcohol<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is involved<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two-thirds of hookups involved alcohol<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For many of those who had engaged in hookups, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/are-long-term-relationships-better-than-casual-ones\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">committed relationship<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was still on their radar, and often their hookup partners were assessed for their long-term potential<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was almost equal for both men and women in the study to admit that hooking up was sexually and emotionally satisfying<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The two biggest influences for individuals to see their hookup again was that of familiarity and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mutual<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> enjoyment<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hooking up was more of \u2018a thing\u2019 for first and second year students who wanted to gain sexual experience. From year three, many students\u2014especially women\u2014were more interested in starting a committed relationship and began hooking up less<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hooking Up vs. Settling Down<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With that, are we looking at a culture of hooking up, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one-night stands<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sexual experimentation without any goals of dating or settling down? Actually, no!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a fact that young people don\u2019t get married at around the same age as their parents did.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, the median age of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">marriage<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 1960\u2019s was 21 for women and 23 for men. Now, people of that age have more room to hook up and socialise during all the additional years before there\u2019s a serious goal of marriage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But that\u2019s not all that this study found. It was also discovered that there\u2019s a trend of increased celibacy in American youths, especially men between the ages of 18 and 24. Why is this?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>It could be for a number of reasons, such as:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spending more time on the Internet, leaving less room for other activities<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having steady partners in which the frequency of sex declines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Having a young child or <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">children<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not meeting new people at work anymore due to online and freelance work<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Longer commutes to meet with sexual partners because of online working and bigger distance ranges used on dating apps<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">porn<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> rather than engaging in sexual activity<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In another <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/soc.uncg.edu\/people\/arielle-kuperberg\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study by Arielle T. Kuperberg<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, 24,000 college students around the United States were surveyed between the years 2005 and 2011.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study also concluded that dating is, in fact, not dead. The researchers found that around 62 percent of these students had had a casual hookup, but that 61 percent reported going out on a date. Of that, only eight percent of all students had hooked up without ever going on a date or being in a <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term relationship<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This same study found that 71 percent of men wished they had more opportunities to find long-term romantic relationships, and 67 percent of women felt the same.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, more men were interested in finding a relationship as opposed to having a one-night stand or a hookup. Interestingly, however, a recent report showed that one-third of recent marriages in the study began in a hookup context. Isn\u2019t that something?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quite frankly, this information may come as a shock to many. Today, it seems as though people of all ages and backgrounds complain that they wish dating was as natural and easy as it was back in the day. You know, the ultimate love story of gazing across a room to lock eyes with someone special, leading to a whirlwind <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romance<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and possibly marriage.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of these individuals are pessimistic when it comes to online dating, which is essentially the most prevalent form of dating today, believing that it\u2019ll never lead to anything serious. With this information, however, it\u2019s been found that this isn\u2019t actually the case (especially when concerned with college-going individuals).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our advice? If you\u2019re looking for \u2018the one\u2019, try to go into the dating world or onto dating apps with a glass-half-full mentality, and be mindful of who you\u2019re talking to and what you\u2019re talking about.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Evidently, dating today, whether it\u2019s online or offline, does still lead to those sunshine days of love and lust.
