There must be something magical about that warm embrace, there\u2019s no denying it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Whichever way you feel or go about hugging, there are actually some amazing, and dare we say extraordinary, benefits of hugging. These include not only <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mental health<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> benefits, but also physical health benefits and an overall better sense of wellbeing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h1><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Are the Health Benefits of Hugging?<\/span><\/h1>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we mentioned, the act of hugging has a slew of benefits that range from physical to mental, emotional, and beyond.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And today, we\u2019re going to let you in on all the amazing ways that you can benefit from giving your loved ones or those closest to you, a good ol\u2019 fashioned hug. After all, a hug is a form of human connection that all of us need to some degree.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, the next time you lean in for a comforting hug, you may just be more <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mindful<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of how remarkable that act can be.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The 5 Benefits of Hugging<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are surely more than five benefits of hugging, as each individual may experience hugging differently. These five however are scientifically supported, thus they\u2019re applicable to everyone.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1. Hugging Can Reduce Inflammation<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone is sick, their body may become inflamed resulting in even more discomfort. And even though inflammation is no fun, it\u2019s simply a way for one\u2019s body to try to fight off any infection. In a study however, it was found that those who gave and received more hugs over a period of 14 days had less inflammation in the body than those who received less or no hugs at all during that time frame.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Not only that, but hugging also has the ability to reduce pain! One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.lww.com\/hnpjournal\/pages\/articleviewer.aspx?year=2004&amp;issue=05000&amp;article=00006&amp;type=abstract\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that those with fibromyalgia experienced less <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">pain<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and an increased quality of life when they received a touch-based treatment, such as hugging.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2. Hugging Can Reduce Blood Pressure<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found that, in premenopausal women between the ages of 20 and 29, those who received hugs from their spouse had lower blood pressure scores.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/15206831\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> looked at 200 adults, split in two groups. The one group was instructed to hold hands with their partner for 10 minutes followed by a 20-second hug, while the second group simply sat in silence with their partner for the same amount of time. The first group was found to have had reductions in blood pressure levels, and a lower heart rate. In other words, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">touch<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and affection may be good for your heart health.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">3. Hugging Can Reduce the Severity of the Common Cold<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/0956797614559284\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> group looked at 404 adults and found that, when they received hugs, they experienced less interpersonal <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stress<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">-induced susceptibility to infectious disease. They came to this conclusion by having these adults be exposed to a virus in quarantine that causes the common cold after the 14 days of hugging.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They also concluded that those who did get sick whilst having a good support system (involving hugs) showed less severe symptoms than those with little or no support system. In other words, hugging and having a good support system can aid in a stress-buffering effect, leading to less severe illness.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">4. Hugging Can Promote the Production of Oxytocin<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/what-is-the-hormone-oxytocin\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oxytocin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> aka \u2018the love\/cuddle hormone\u2019 is a powerful hormone that can act as a stress buffer, and prompt people to feel closer and more connected to one another. For example, oxytocin is released after sex, as well as when a mother is <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">breastfeeding<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> her infant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the case of hugging, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/full\/10.1177\/0265407514536294\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study of 34 married couples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed that increased hugging over a four-week period resulted in higher levels of oxytocin. The conclusion was that high quality relationships and support were both independently associated with higher levels of oxytocin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Hugging Others in Support Can Benefit You Too!<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Receiving the benefits of a hug is a two-way-street. And in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/22071630\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was found that when someone was experiencing something stressful, the giver of a hug to that person resulted in reduced stress.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This study looked at <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">heterosexual<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> couples in which the men were given unpleasant electric shocks. When their female partner held the arm of their partner during this shock, they experienced reduced stress. Researchers also found more activity in the parts of the brain associated with the rewards of maternal behaviour in the women. Essentially, when we hug someone to comfort them, we too can experience the rewards associated with said-hug.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And there you have it, folks! It\u2019s been proven that hugging has remarkable benefits!
