Regardless, this is not to say that an autistic person cannot have a fulfilling sex life.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism, Sex &amp; Sexuality<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The thing about autism is that a person\u2019s brain works in a way that\u2019s different from how <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">society<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> expects. But every person on the autism spectrum is different. Some may need (more) support than others with their daily tasks, others may need low levels of support, or even no support at all.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But because autistic individuals often face difficulties during social interactions, it\u2019s no surprise that they may struggle when it comes to forming relationships.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, before we discuss autism, relationships, sex, and sexuality, let\u2019s look at a brief definition of autism.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What Is Autism?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism, or Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) refers to a broad range of conditions characterised by challenges with social skills, repetitive behaviour, speech, and non-verbal communication.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a neurodevelopmental (brain development) condition, and could be a result of disruptions in normal brain growth very early in development. It\u2019s also been shown that, for many people, genetics play a big role. These disruptions affect the brain\u2019s development and regulate how brain cells communicate with each other.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.autismspeaks.org\/autism-statistics-asd\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 statistics from the Centers for Disease Control<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, one in 44 children are diagnosed with autism in the U.S. It further states that one in 26 boys identify with autism and one in 116 girls identify with autism. It\u2019s important to note that autism is diagnosed on a spectrum. In other words, every autistic person faces their own challenges.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does Autism Affect Your Sexual Development?\u00a0<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism doesn\u2019t affect one\u2019s sexual development, and does not mean that one cannot find mutually fulfilling relationships that involve intimacy and sex. It also doesn\u2019t mean that an autistic person isn\u2019t interested in sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fact, most people on the spectrum want to have <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">romantic<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and\/or sexual relationships, and they have the same range of sexual experiences and behaviours as non-autistic people.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communication in a Relationship for Those with Autism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When one partner has autism, it can place obstacles when it comes to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/casey-tanner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">communication<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sensory perceptions which, in turn, can influence sexual relationships. When it comes to communication, it may be hard for an autistic person to talk about their sexual wants and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">desires<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWithout a firm understanding of how neurodevelopment differences are coming up in a partnership, couples can sometimes believe their partners do not have the best intentions for them or the relationship,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.lesliesickelslcsw.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Leslie Sickels<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, LCSW, a neurodiverse couples therapist.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Navigating Sex &amp; Intimacy with an Autistic Partner<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re in a relationship with someone on the autistic spectrum, you can start by learning about your partner and how they experience the world. <\/span><b>To do this, it may be helpful to:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Communicate with your partner without judgement<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let your partner know that they\u2019re safe to discuss how they\u2019re feeling with you and that they can ask any questions<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let them know that they have a safe space to talk about what they do and do not enjoy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Educate yourself on autism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consult a medical professional to learn more about autism<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Approach things practically<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Take into account any motor coordination issues that your partner may have, and plan with these issues in mind<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Talk about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/tiktok-teaching-consent\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">consent<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and boundaries to decrease miscommunication relating to social cues<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Accept that everyone\u2019s <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sexuality<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and sexual experience is different<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Autism &amp; Sexuality<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some autistic individuals may experience hyposensitivity or hypersensitivity, as well as repetitive behaviours, which can influence sexual behaviour.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC5789215\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2017 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, it was shown that autistic people may experience <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/why-am-i-so-horny\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">hypersexual<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or paraphilic fantasies more so than non-autistic people. Paraphilic fantasies encompass recurrent, intense, sexually arousing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/what-do-sexual-fantasies-mean\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fantasies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, urges, or behaviours that are distressing or disabling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Adversely, a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.frontiersin.org\/articles\/10.3389\/fpsyt.2021.685256\/full\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2021 study<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> showed more similarities than differences in how autistic and non-autistic people approach romantic relationships (for example, wishing to have a partner).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most disturbing result of this study, however, is the fact that a significant amount of participants felt as though their knowledge about sexuality was limited. In other words, there seems to be a big educational barrier when it comes to those on the spectrum understanding sex and sexuality.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSelf-report often reflects that autistic teens and adolescents feel they have limited knowledge about sex compared to non-autistic peers. This is likely due to the lack of information provided to them,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says psychologist, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.halcyontherapygroup.com\/about\/dr-julie-landry-pysd-abpp.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Julie Landry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, PsyD.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Specialised Sex Education for Those with Autism<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the 2021 study suggested, those with autism find it difficult to understand standard sexual education as it\u2019s currently being taught in schools. This may be because schools don\u2019t have the means or abilities to accommodate diverse students.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For that reason, a huge step forward in helping those with autism, is to re-evaluate how they receive <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/lelo-podcast-sex-education-in-the-21st-century\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sex education<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in schools.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIt is particularly important for the sexual health of autistic adolescents and young adults since sexual knowledge is often more limited for autistic individuals, especially during the crucial period of adolescence or the first years of adulthood,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">adds Landry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">She goes on to say that autistic young adults often receive less sexual guidance and support because of their barriers to learning, as well as assumptions and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stigma<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> made by educators.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are, however, sexual health programs that have been developed to assist those with autism. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sparkforautism.org\/discover_article\/sex-education-and-autism\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One particular program<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, developed by Rachel Loftin and Planned Parenthood, uses a variety of different vocabulary and puts focus on visuals. They also are more explicit when it could be helpful.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Their approach is that saying things such as: <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cDon\u2019t let anyone do what you don\u2019t want them to do,\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is vague.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They are more specific in their approach. Instead, they say things such as:<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cHere are some things that might come up if you have a romantic partner. You can decide if you want them to happen or not. For example, do you want to kiss someone with your mouth closed? Do you want someone to touch your neck?\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In this way, they\u2019re trying to set <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/sexual-boundaries-and-saying-no\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">boundaries<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> while exploring possible sensory issues or trigger zones.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How Does Autism Affect Sex?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because everyone is different, the way in which sex is affected will vary depending on the person.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Here are some ways that autism can affect sex:<\/b><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Sensory sensitivity: <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some individuals on the spectrum may be sensitive to sounds and physical <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/deep-spot-orgasms\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sensations of sex<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and it may cause discomfort. Talking beforehand could prove helpful, as well as coming up with a way for them to let you know they\u2019re feeling uncomfortable (verbal or non-verbal). This could be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/deciding-hard-limits-safe-words\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">safe word<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or any other signal.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Communication:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> because many autistic people may not be able to communicate as well when they\u2019re overwhelmed, you could come up with a gesture that means \u201cyes\u201d or \u201cno\u201d.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Social cues:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> it may be difficult for an autistic person to gauge social cues, which could make sex uncomfortable for one or both partners. It could be beneficial for an autistic individual to tell their partner to be direct with them if they feel any negative feelings during intimacy.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The takeaway? Autism doesn\u2019t affect one\u2019s sexual development, but it is something that can be challenging to navigate.
