Avoid words such as rejection because it really can sting and possibly even be a trigger due to childhood issues or other situations in the past.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s important to be direct and straightforward\u2014yet very kind and compassionate,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8221; says clinical psychologist <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drcarlamanly.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carla Marie Manly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>2. No guilt\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/why-do-you-always-end-up-in-toxic-relationships\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Breaking up<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with someone isn\u2019t easy. You are not in charge of how they feel or what they want\u2014you only know how you feel and what you want.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So instead of using \u201cwe\u201d or \u201cus\u201d statements, try to stick to \u201cI\u201d statements.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>5. In this way, they don\u2019t need to run away with their imagination, conjuring up all the reasons as to why things ended.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cOne of the challenges I hear all the time from my clients is the confusion that they feel when someone isn\u2019t clear about why they are no longer interested,&#8221; <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kindman.co\/kaitlin-kindman-lcsw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaitlin Kindman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> &#8220;When we don\u2019t have specific information, we tend to fill in the blanks ourselves.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, keep your message quite simple overall. If you start to over explain, it could lead to more confusion and negative feelings.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAvoid over-explaining, rationalizing, or getting into a back-and-forth about how things could possibly work out,\u201d <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">says Battle.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>6. Timing is important\u00a0<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">&#8220;<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Be thoughtful.<\/span><\/i> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rejection of any kind is hard to dish and receive,&#8221;<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> says Battle. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThink about when might be a good time to deliver the news, for them and yourself.&#8221;<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So for example, if the person has something really important the next day, like a big presentation at work, wait until the following day.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the same time, think about yourself too. If you\u2019re not in a good headspace, take some time to relax and become more level headed before you have the conversation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><strong>Is it ever okay to ghost someone?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And finally, the topic of ghosting! In most situations, ghosting is simply not okay. It can leave a person feeling hurt, confused, misled, and <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anxious<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can also lead to worrying or obsessing over what went wrong or how they\u2019re not worthy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The general rule of thumb here is to treat others how you\u2019d like to be treated. Respect, empathy, and clear communication is the best way to let someone know you\u2019re not interested in them.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But are there some instances where ghosting is okay?
