Porcupines<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Porcupines are large, cute-looking rodents that carry an array of sharp quills on their backs to protect themselves from threats and predators. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.semanticscholar.org\/paper\/Copulation-in-the-Porcupine-Shadle\/84aa4caf87362fe931caeaa078202389979cf0e8\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers found<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that male porcupines often roll in a ball and perform self-fellatio.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When researchers observed porcupines at the <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.porcupine.org\/porcupine\/porcupines.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">University of Buffalo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the 1940s, they found that both females and males manipulate their genitals with inanimate objects like sticks for example, in pursuit of an orgasm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">5. Birds\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Birds are an exceptional animal on this list because they don&#8217;t have genitalia. Birds have cloaca instead, which is a hole they use for everything \u2013 to urinate, defecate, give sperm, take sperm, and lay eggs. This cloaca doesn&#8217;t have nerve endings the same way genitalia does.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.jstor.org\/stable\/40212124\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientists have observed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> birds masturbating. Primates\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Primates are a group of animals that humans belong to. Penguins\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Penguins are known for their risque and controversial sexual behavior. Scientist George Murray Levick <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/world\/2012\/jun\/09\/sex-depravity-penguins-scott-antarctic\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">observed Adelie penguins in Antarctica<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> at the beginning of the 20th century and observed sexual behaviors like coercion, necrophilia, and masturbation amongst the species.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But Why Do Animals Masturbate?<\/span><\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is difficult to pinpoint the reason why animals masturbate. While we know that some species do, there is simply not enough research to know exactly why. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/35316107\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some researchers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> believe that just like humans, other animal species also masturbate for pleasure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Masturbation for pleasure makes sense in male counterparts because, while not all male animals ejaculate while masturbating, many do. And we know that ejaculation for males is when the orgasm happens. However, females in the animal kingdom might also find pleasure in masturbating.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All female mammals have clitorises, not only humans. It appears that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rspb.2022.1702\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">scientists recently discovered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that even female snakes have clitorises (a two-part clitoris!). Some more recent research also shows that dolphin females have clitorises that very closely resemble human anatomy.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While clitorises in non-human animals are not widely studied, and we don&#8217;t know the full picture of whether it works the same way when it comes to pleasure, we do know one thing about clitorises \u2013 it is an organ that&#8217;s designed for pleasure. So, the speculation that animals masturbate for pleasure could be true.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.plos.org\/plosone\/article?id=10.1371\/journal.pone.0013060\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers looked<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> into the possible reasons why male Cape ground squirrels masturbate, they found that masturbation can serve as a form of genital grooming. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/royalsocietypublishing.org\/doi\/10.1098\/rspb.2023.0061#d1e720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Researchers believe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that masturbation, for male counterparts, serves as a way to prevent STIs and ensure their sperm is highest quality, which increases their fertilization success.
