According to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.who.int\/health-topics\/cardiovascular-diseases#tab=tab_1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">World Health Organization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (WHO), cardiovascular disease takes an estimated 17.9 million lives each year, the majority due to heart attacks and strokes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s hard to get an accurate number on how many people are living with heart disease because many go undiagnosed until a serious incident or death occurs.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s normal to worry about your health and normal activities when you have a heart condition. If you or someone you love is living with cardiovascular disease, you\u2019re likely still able to enjoy your life, including sex. But of course, it brings up a lot of questions and concerns.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s why we\u2019re here to explore what sex looks like with heart disease, how it may be limited, and how to enjoy your (sex) life while living with heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">*This article is not intended to be medical advice. If you have cardiovascular issues, please talk to your doctor or cardiologist about sex for your particular needs and condition.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<h2>Types of Heart Disease<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0First, let\u2019s learn about heart disease and who it affects. The terms \u201ccardiovascular disease\u201d and \u201cheart disease\u201d are often used interchangeably, but they\u2019re not the same.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">All heart diseases are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nhlbi.nih.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/publications\/FactSheetKnowDiffDesign2020V4a.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cardiovascular diseases<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, but not all cardiovascular diseases are heart diseases. Cardiovascular disease is an umbrella term for diseases that affect the heart or blood vessels. For example, coronary artery disease which causes clogged arteries can cause heart conditions like heart failure and stroke. Heart disease is any condition that affects the heart\u2019s structure and function<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The main <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.mayoclinic.org\/diseases-conditions\/heart-disease\/symptoms-causes\/syc-20353118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">types of heart disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> include:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart valve disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart muscle disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Congenital heart defects (conditions you\u2019re born with)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Blood vessel disease<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Irregular heartbeats (arrhythmias)<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain lifestyle factors can increase someone\u2019s risk of developing heart disease like smoking, drinking alcohol, and not eating a balanced diet. Because heart disease is so common, many people have a genetic predisposition to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter what type of heart disease you have and what caused it, you want to know how you can continue enjoying the best parts of life \u2013 like sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Sex with Heart Disease<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A common fear for people with heart disease is that they\u2019ll have a heart attack while they\u2019re having sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/profiles\/details\/michael-blaha\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Michael Blaha, M.D., M.P.H<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, director of clinical research at the Johns Hopkins <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/heart_vascular_institute\/clinical_services\/centers_excellence\/ciccarone\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ciccarone Center for the Prevention of Heart Disease<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cWhile sexual activity does increase your heart rate, it\u2019s not something that most people with stable heart disease should worry about. In general, if you\u2019re able to climb stairs or jog or walk a mile without difficulty, it\u2019s safe for you to have sex.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risks of having sex are pretty similar to doing any other physical activity. That being said, if you\u2019ve had a recent cardiovascular incident or are experiencing symptoms, you may want to avoid sexual activity or wait until you have the go-ahead from your doctor.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People with certain unstable heart conditions may want to refrain from having sex:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Chest pain (angina)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heart failure<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Uncontrolled blood pressure<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another thing to keep on your radar is using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.health.harvard.edu\/mens-health\/are-erectile-dysfunction-pills-safe-for-men-with-heart-disease\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">erectile dysfunction medications<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if you have heart disease. Certain ED medications may not be safe for those with certain heart conditions, be sure to your doctor about your options.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Is Sex Good for Heart Health?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On the flip side, having sex may actually help <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pennmedicine.org\/updates\/blogs\/heart-and-vascular-blog\/2018\/june\/sex-and-your-heart\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support your heart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> health!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes cardiovascular activity is good for your cardiovascular health, but that\u2019s not why you are and your heart may benefit from having sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sex doesn\u2019t generally require the level of aerobic activity many people assume it does. That of course depends on your *ahem* \u201cathletic ability\u201d. In general, exercise does help lower your blood pressure and strengthen your heart.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Although not everyone who has heart disease is older, it does get more common with age. There is a bit of stigma around having sex as an older person. But every adult who wants to have a healthy sex life should be able to have one.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, why is sex good for your heart? And we don\u2019t mean metaphorically!<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.hopkinsmedicine.org\/health\/wellness-and-prevention\/is-sex-dangerous-if-you-have-heart-disease#:~:text=Studies%20suggest%20that%20men%20who,reduce%20stress%20and%20improve%20sleep.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">studies<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> suggest that women who reported having satisfying sex lives and men who have sex at least twice a week are less likely to have a heart attack.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During sex you release endorphins. These endorphins can help decrease depression and anxiety, both of which can increase your risk of heart disease.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Another way sex may help support your heart health is by strengthening your interpersonal relationships. A study published in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.heart.org\/en\/news\/2020\/02\/05\/how-a-happy-relationship-can-help-your-health\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Journal of the American Heart Association<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> found that when compared with married people, people with heart disease who were unmarried were 52% more likely to have a heart attack or die from a cardiovascular problem after four years.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While this study doesn\u2019t exactly touch on sex, it\u2019s safe to assume that most of these married couples were intimate in one way or another. For most people, sex is an important part of their relationship and life in general. You don\u2019t need to deprive yourself of life\u2019s joys unless it\u2019s medically necessary.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>When To Seek Medical Care<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We hope this helped clear up any confusion and stress you may have about sex and your heart! Again, it\u2019s generally safe to have sex if you have heart disease as long as you\u2019re not actively experiencing symptoms.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While people with heart disease can absolutely have a normal and healthy sex life, there are a few things to look out for.
