An estimated <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/link.springer.com\/article\/10.1007%2Fs00192-011-1583-0\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women experience incontinence or leakage during sex, either occasionally or consistently. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peeing when you orgasm just comes down to biology.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Why Do People Pee When They Orgasm?<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Everybody is unique, and while there are a few underlying factors, it\u2019s hard to say exactly why you pee when you orgasm \u2013 without going to a healthcare professional.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There isn\u2019t much research on the difference between peeing during an orgasm, or peeing during sex (coital incontinence), so we\u2019ll take a look at both. Urinary incontinence is very common among adults \u2013 up to 80% of women.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you already experience some level of urinary incontinence, it\u2019s easy to pee a little (or a lot) with various physical pressures and stimulations. It\u2019s hard to find an exact statistic, but researchers estimate that somewhere between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/abs\/pii\/S1743609515322414#:~:text=The%20incidence%20of%20coital%20incontinence,and%20detrusor%20overactivity%20(DO).\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10%-27%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women pee during sex.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Incontinence is when you frequently experience the urge to pee and\/or when you leak urine. This can happen when you\u2019re walking, when you cough or sneeze, or when you orgasm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The most common causes of incontinence are:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinary tract infections<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pregnancy and birth<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic floor injuries<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certain medications like antidepressants and those for blood pressure\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Men can also experience incontinence during sex or when they orgasm, although it\u2019s much less common since the opening to the bladder closes during erection.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">People who have had their prostates removed, usually to treat prostate cancer, are much more likely to experience incontinence during sex.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>Pee vs. Squirt: The Great Debate<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can\u2019t talk about peeing during sex without talking about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/squirting-its-not-what-you-think\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">squirting<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It\u2019s hard to get an actual estimate, but somewhere between <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tandfonline.com\/doi\/full\/10.1080\/00224499.2023.2243939#:~:text=It%20is%20difficult%20to%20compare,during%20sexual%20activity%2C%20including%20squirting.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">10% to 54%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of women squirt or produce other fluids during sex. While squirt does have urine in it, they\u2019re not the same thing.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Women have what\u2019s called the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/my.clevelandclinic.org\/health\/body\/24089-skenes-gland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Skene\u2019s glands<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, sometimes referred to as the female prostate. These glands lie on the lower end of the urethra and swell during arousal, secreting lubricating fluid.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Skene\u2019s gland, along with the bladder, is also partially responsible for squirting. \u201cSquirt\u201d is a combination of uric acid, creatine, and yes \u2013 urine. For some people, squirting seems to happen involuntarily, while others can squirt voluntarily. It most often happens while stimulating the G-spot, as it\u2019s close to the Skene\u2019s gland, but it can also happen from clitoral and even <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/so-you-want-to-try-anal-heres-how-its-done\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anal stimulation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Skene\u2019s gland also produces female ejaculate, a milky fluid that\u2019s sometimes released during an orgasm. Female ejaculate is milky and comes out in small amounts, whereas squirt is more watery and tends to be clear or yellowish.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, how do you know if you\u2019re peeing or squirting when you orgasm? Unless you get it tested in a lab, you likely don\u2019t know for sure. Based on anecdotal evidence, however, squirting and peeing tend to feel different.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Peeing tends to come out in one continuous stream, whereas squirting may come in small (or large) bursts. Intuitively, people who squirt can tell the difference between peeing and squirting. While both offer a relief, squirting tends to be more sudden and has more of a sexual sensation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Some people become aroused specifically by urinating on their partner or being urinated on. This is typically called pee play or \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/getting-started-with-golden-showers-pee-play\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">golden showers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h2>How To Stop Peeing During Orgasm<\/h2>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you suspect that you\u2019re actually peeing during sex or when you orgasm versus squirting, we recommend contacting a medical professional. They\u2019ll most likely refer you to a specialist like a gynecologist or pelvic floor physical therapist.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This specialist may recommend a variety of treatments like:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Finding sex positions that don\u2019t put pressure on your bladder<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bladder retraining<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pelvic floor physiotherapy<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Getting botox in your bladder muscle<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Using <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myhealth.alberta.ca\/Health\/Pages\/conditions.aspx?hwid=hw220147&amp;lang=en-ca#:~:text=Electrical%20stimulation%20is%20used%20to,a%20vaginal%20or%20anal%20electrode.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">electrical stimulation therapy<\/span><\/a><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Limiting diuretic beverages like caffeine or alcohol, especially before having sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pee before and after having sex<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Trying certain medications like anti-tremor medications or ones that reduce bladder spasms<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You can start strengthening your pelvic floor muscles on your own with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.lelo.com\/blog\/inner-strength-training-kegel-exercises-properly\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kegel exercises<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which can also help you have better orgasms. Here\u2019s our quick guide to kegels:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Urinate before starting.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Find a comfortable position \u2013 lying down, sitting up, or even standing.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pinpoint the muscles that you would use to hold or pause urination.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tighten those muscles for five seconds, then relax them.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Avoid clenching your glutes or abdominal while doing this, just focusing on the pelvic floor muscles.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Aim for about 20 kegels at a time.
