Regret, Guilt, Moral Conflict & Societal Influence

These are big reasons as to why some people feel anxious after sex. Past Trauma or Negative Sexual Experiences

For survivors of sexual trauma, abuse, or assault, sex can be a big trigger, leading to anxiety through flashbacks, dissociation, or emotional flooding. Even consensual sex (with a loving partner) can evoke memories.

A person with a history of sexual trauma may feel as though they’re ready to experience sexual activity, but it’s possible that the body remembers past experiences even if the mind doesn’t consciously link them. This makes it difficult for those to truly trust themselves, their partners, and may lead to a fear of intimacy.

Why anxiety might arise after sex rather than during is because the nervous system may associate intimacy with danger, leading to a delayed anxiety response. Relationship Uncertainty

Sex can bring a lot of uncertainty or ambiguity into a relationship, such as wondering where things stand. This can lead to feelings of abandonment, and the mind worrying about worst-case scenarios.

In another example, there may be sex-related topics that go unspoken, such as mismatched libidos or emotional distance.
