LELO Survey Reveals the Psychological and Intimacy Toll on Young Adults

The decision for young adults to live at home is overwhelmingly driven by financial necessity, primarily to save money (43.96%) or due to the high cost of housing, rising rents, and house prices (31.34%). However, the cost of this arrangement extends far beyond financial savings, translating into a profound psychological, emotional, and relational strain for a significant portion of this generation. The Profound Psychological Toll

The LELO survey reveals a deep, pervasive negative psychological impact:

  • Societal Pressure: A vast majority of young adults feel intense negative societal pressure due to not living independently. This includes feeling a sense of failure (79.03%), being stigmatized (77.86%), or experiencing general pressure (82.81%).
  • Stress and Feeling Stuck: Over half of respondents experience feelings of stress (52.47%) and feeling stuck (52%) in their situation.
  • Emotional Tax: While not constant, a significant minority experience frequent conflict or an “emotional tax”—being treated like a teenager—with 15.94% reporting it “often” and 6.31% reporting it “always”.

The Crisis in Intimacy

The lack of independence carries a direct, negative consequence on personal relationships and sexual well-being:

  • Romantic Relationships: Nearly three-quarters (72.94%) agree that their living situation makes pursuing romantic relationships more challenging.
  • Negative Impact on Sex Life: Over half (57.33%) report an overall negative impact on their sex life. Specifically, this affects the frequency (37.99%) and the quality (29.94%) of their sexual encounters.
  • Intimacy Challenges: The main challenges cited are a Lack of Privacy (39.26%) and the Fear of being heard (34.34%).

The Ripple Effect on Work and Health

The cumulative stress arising from financial necessity and the limitations on intimacy leads to poor mental health outcomes and affects other critical areas of life:

  • Mental Strain: Many respondents feel sexually frustrated (29.78%).
  • Work Efficiency: A notable percentage report negative effects on their behavior/efficiency at work (28.55%).
  • Sleep: Nearly a third report that the situation negatively affects their sleep (27.10%).

While 45.17% of respondents view their living arrangement as temporary, a substantial portion see it as a Longer-term arrangement for financial benefit (26.60%) or even an Indefinite living situation (20.96%). These findings highlight how structural economic problems are creating an unseen drag on the physical, mental, and sexual well-being of a generation, with clear consequences for their lives and, ultimately, for their economic potential.
