How to Know if Your Sex Toy is Waterproof

To know whether your sex toy is waterproof or not, you’ll definitely have to double check the fine print. However, some sex toys will make it very easy for you to learn whether they’re waterproof or not, as it’s often one of their major selling points. Then again there’s lingo attached to the word ‘waterproof’ which may be misleading.

When a sex toy is waterproof, it will be extremely carefully designed. It’ll be watertight and well-sealed, especially around the battery compartment, and the charging point will also be concealed so as not to let any water inside of it.

The only way to know if your sex toy is waterproof, however, is to check all of the relevant details concerning your sex toy, and then make sure you understand the jargon attached to it. Which leads us to our next discussion…

The Difference Between Waterproof and Water Resistant: IPX Levels Explained

When we hear the word ‘waterproof’ we may simply believe that we can drop our favourite items into water for however long we please for a splash of fun. But this isn’t always the case. There’s a difference between a sex toy being 100 percent waterproof and one being water resistant. And that’s why there are several IPX ratings that exist.

IP rating stands for “Ingress Protection”, and is a way in which to measure how well a device is protected from both solid objects and liquids.

The “I” refers to solids, while the “P” refers to liquids (you may have seen sex toys that come with a rating that starts with IP). If a sex toy has an IP rating, it means that they’ve actually been specially tested by a certified and independent company so that it’s accurate and verified.

Let’s look at some examples:

  • IP0X: this term means that it is not protected against physical objects
  • IP6X: this term means that the product is fully dust tight
  • IPX0: this term means that there is absolutely no protection from water
  • IPX8: this term means that a product can be submerged deeper than one meter (with the exact depth needing to be specified by the manufacturer)

Oftentimes, you’ll find sex toys that claim to be IPX7 waterproof. In this case, it can usually be submerged up to one meter in water for about 30 minutes. It doesn’t mean that the toy cannot get damaged however.

It’s important not to take an IPX7 rating and believe that you can keep your toy underwater for however long you please. It’s also important to know that even if you adhere to the advice regarding the IPX7 rating, that there is still a chance you could damage your sex toy.

However, when a sex toy is 100% waterproof, it will be completely sealed and thus water will not get into it. That means that you can completely immerse it in water.

At LELO, we offer a big range of sex toys that are 100% waterproof. If your chosen pleasure product is 100% waterproof, it’ll clearly state so on the package.

If you do, however, gift yourself or a special someone with a splash-proof LELO product, it shouldn’t be fully submerged, water should not get inside of the DC socket or around the interface. And when it comes to cleaning splashproof sex toys, make sure that the base attachement is fastened tightly before you clean it in water.

And now that you know the different lingo attached to the word ‘waterproof’, you can look out for and enjoy your blissful pleasure products in such a way that feels the most orgasmic for you! Go on, make a splash.
